The legendary singer Manna Dey passed away on October 24th in a Bangalore hospital aged 94.
Manna Dey, born Prabodh Chandra Dey, had learnt his art from his uncle, the ‘blind singer’ Krishna Chandra Dey and had also worked as an assistant to him in the early stages of his career. His musical career kicked off in 1942 with the film ‘Tamanna’ and spanned an impressive six decades. Dey sung a number of Bollywood hits but his talent also extended to Rabindra Sangeet and other musical styles with songs sung in over 10 languages.
Although Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh were the more popular choices for lead playback singing, Dey left his mark with iconic songs such as ‘Puchho na kaise’, ‘Aye keri zoharajabi’ and ‘Laga chunri mien daag’, and was particularly revered for his skill with classical numbers. The world of Bollywood was a state of utter shock when it woke up today with the news that stated the sad demise of the legendary singer Manna Dey. The 94 year old singer who passed away at 3.50am this morning at Bengaluru had been ailing for some time. Recently he was admitted to a local hospital in Bengaluru following respiratory ailment and renal failure. He was on ventilator support for some time. New Delhi, Oct 4: Legendary Indian singer Manna Dey has died at the age of 94 at a Bangalore hospital following a recurring lung infection and renal failure.
Dey leaves behind two daughters, his wife Sulochana predeceasing him in 2012
Born Prabodh Chandra Dey on May 1, 1919, the versatile singer began his playback career in 1943 with the film Tamanna and has sung over 3,500 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Assamese and other regional languages.
The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
Dey's greatest hits include 'Ae meri zohrajabeen'.
