Post glasnost romantic thriller
zeppo-215 November 2004
There was a pretty decent espionage thriller germ of an idea in this film but it never really developed into anything concrete. Leading man, Jason Connery sleepwalks through his part and seems to believe he has wandered into a Merchant & Ivory costume drama. The fact he imbues his role with all the charm and charisma of a used condom, doesn't help and fails to convince what the beautiful Laura Girling would ever see in such a dull man.

The plot itself is convoluted and confusing and the ending is just plain puzzling. With different people of different nationalities all involved in the acting, writing, directing, etc, it all ends up a mess.

Better to go back and watch Micheal Caine in the 'Harry Palmer' films, like the 'The Ipcress File.

just horrible...

Hardly seen such bad acting before. However must give credit to the authentic scenery and the general idea.

There is too much romance and far too less politics. Despite its good beginning the movie gets worse and worse towards the end. When they talk about history it just doesn't give the impression they know what they are really talking about.

Very slow storyline mixed with far too much fantasy and and a poor acting on top of that. All in all not worth seeing, especially for those who have a historical interest and most of all nothing for those who like romantic movies with little Ms Nobody meets Mr Perfect who turns out to be the rightful king.

I thought it was a good romantic thriller.

I thought it was a good romantic thriller. It was exciting and really like Jason Connery - he's darling. There were some slow parts but mostly the film kept my interest. The Russian aristocracy points to the plot were also interesting.
