- A respected funeral home director murders his ex-lover after she threatened to expose him as a thief. Lt. Columbo investigates.
- Hollywood gossip reporter, Verity Chandler, is planning her next expose. Which is to reveal how famed mortician, Eric Prince, built his empire. When she reveals to Prince her plans, he kills her. He then places her in the casket of a man scheduled to be cremated. And cremates her. He then goes to her house and changes the story she was working on to make it seem someone else wanted to get her. When no one hears from her, the police are called in and Lt. Columbo is on the job. - Eric Prince is the undertaker to the stars. When Hollywood gossip columnist, Verity Chandler, drops in at his latest celebrity funeral to tell him her next expose will be about him, he kills her. He cremates her body instead of the latest movie star client and her ashes are sprinkled by helicopter over the Hollywood hills. When Chandler's disappearance is reported to the police, Lt. Colombo is asked to look into the case. He's immediately puzzled with some of the things he finds and concludes that Prince likely switched the bodies he cremated.
