Reasonably good short, ostensibly starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, though he's not in it very much
llltdesq7 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a black and white short done by the Lantz Studios, part of a series featuring a character named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. I will be discussing some detail, so this is a spoiler warning:

The short opens with a group of ducks-Papa, Mama and five baby ducks-four white and one black-strolling onto the beach. This is followed shortly by a scene showing Oswald and his dog setting up on the beach. Oswald puts his dog in charge of watching their lunch, in a large picnic basket, warning of dire consequences if anything should happen to "the lunch".

The five little ducks spot "the lunch" and decide that they want it for themselves. The little black duck is the one with the most resourcefulness and is the brains of the outfit, with most of the effort and ideas coming from him.

Several efforts are made to get the basket and its contents, until they finally succeed in taking the basket out to sea. The dog swims out after them, but the little black duck (who's doing all the work here) tricks him into believing that a shark's after him and he races back to shore.

Meanwhile, an octopus spots the ducks and manages to catch them and the Papa duck tries unsuccessfully to save them. It's up to the dog to swim to the rescue. After a struggle with the octopus, what has to be the best animated sequence takes place where the dog emerges victorious. I won't describe the gag, which is excellent and probably the funniest bit in the short.

As the dog brings the ducks and basket safely to the shore, where the two older ducks and Oswald (who suddenly re-appears after being gone much of the cartoon) cheer the rescue. The closing gag is cute, if predictable.

This short is on the DVD Attack of the '30s Characters and is well worth checking out. Recommended.

Beachcombers is a pretty good Walter Lantz Oswald Rabbit cartune

Just watched this Walter Lantz Oswald Rabbit cartune on YouTube. Oswald has given his dog Elmer a chance to guard their picnic basket while Oswald goes fishing. Elmer has to deal with the offspring of the duck family who wants the food in the basket. It's the little black duck the dog mainly has to worry about...Mostly amusing if not completely hilarious, there's quite a few good gags. So in summary, Beachcombers is worth a look for any animation buff.

The acutal score for this short was actually 6.9/10

Well the actual score for this short was supposed to be 6.9/10 since this cartoon is alright. It's almost decent but there were some flaws in it that dragged it to 6.9/10. That's it...

Oswald on the beach
TheLittleSongbird19 July 2017
Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding animation characters. It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like.

Oswald in the Disney years saw mostly good to very good cartoons, and while the Winkler years had some duds there were also cartoons as good as the best of the Disney years. The 1929-1930 batches of Walter Lantz-directed Oswald cartoons were a mixed bag, with some good, some forgettable and not much special and a few mediocre. The 1931 batch was mostly underwhelming, with only 6 out of 18 cartoons being above average or more. The 1932 batch had a few not so good, though the cartoons in question were nothing compared to the worst of the previous 3 years, cartoons, but most were decent to good and some even very good. The 1933 batch is one of the most consistent, with the weakest 'Beau Best' still being decent. The 1934 batch were mostly nice and decent if unexceptional, with a few average ones and 'Sky Larks' and 'Toyland Premiere' being very good.

'Beachcombers' is pretty good, and so much better than the weak previous cartoon 'Kiddie Revue'. Oswald here is a little bland and has little to do, considering he is meant to be the lead he felt more a supporting character if even that.

The story is pretty flimsy, then again this component has rarely been a strong suit in an Oswald cartoon, and the ending is easily foreseeable and tries too hard to be cute, a common problem with the later Oswald cartoons (though most are still decent regardless, one just misses the more chaotic nature).

However, the animation and gags are very well done. Once again the animation is terrific, it is elaborate, beautifully and cleverly drawn and rich in detail in the backgrounds. The fight with the octopus is the animation standout, so imaginative and the attention to detail is a wonder.

Gags too are very amusing, with the best being the rescue from the octopus, to say it's funny is an understatement as well as tense. They are well timed and misfires are few. Only the ending doesn't quite work.

Oswald's underuse is a disappointment but the colourful supporting characters more than make up for it. Love the resourcefulness of the ducks, while the dog is both funny and interesting in personality and the octopus appropriately antagonistic.

In summary, pretty good and worth watching. 7/10 Bethany Cox
