Good Ideas But They Don't Know When to Quit

When a friendly barber's pole is stolen, Felix goes to find him a replacement -- the North Pole -- in this overly long Felix the Cat cartoon.

Most Felix the Cat cartoons time in at a full reel, but this one goes one for more than ten in the version posted to the British Pathe site on Youtube. At time it looks like it was transferred at too low a speed, then at others it is just fine. Perhaps director Otto Messmer was experimenting with longer lengths or perhaps he was just too fond of this one. While there are a couple of excellent gags -- I am very much taken with how Felix gets to the North Pole -- the great length of the film makes them sparse.

It's still a highly watchable cartoon, especially from 1924, but the Pat Sullivan studio certainly had and would do a lot better.
