- The will of the recently deceased Ojala's master is missing. His devious nephew Olli, who's to take over the house, tries to win over Anna, the daughter of the Roinila house, who is attached to another man.
- The drama Roinilan talossa (1935), directed by Erkki Karu, is based on Minna Canth's play of the same name. In a rural landscape in southern Finland, a search is on for the missing will of the recently deceased Ojala's master, whose nephew Olli takes over the house. The devious Olli tries to win over Anna, the daughter of the Roinila house, who is attached to steward Mauno.
- Roinila is a prosperous farm in South Häme. The widowed host's adult children have both already chosen their beloved: daughter Anna is dating Mauno, the head of the house, and son Eero is attached to his childhood friend Elli, the foster daughter of the recently deceased Ojala host. However, the house has been taken over by the master's nephew Olli, as no will has been found. Elli has been forced to leave Ojala, just like Meri-Matti, a relative and fishing partner of the host.
Because of his fiery nature, Mauno has a dispute with the master over the use of the fallow land: the master makes it clear that Mauno must submit to his command or leave. In the face of a break-up, Anna assures Mauno that he can trust her, and he assures her that he will never forget her. When the master of Roinila does not outright forbid Olli from proposing to Anna, he goes straight to the point and slanders Mauno to Anna, who, to the man's surprise, appears on the swinging hill with Olli and lets him walk her home. Elli and Eero's relationship is also shattered when she calls him filthy after he accidentally dirties his arms and face.
However, Eero has promised to find out about Ojala's missing will. He goes fishing with him and is in haze until he starts talking about the judge who made the will, whose name he can't remember, but whom he and Eero decide to go looking for together. In Roinila, the women are upset: Anna is crying, Elli and Leena, Matti's mistress, are worried about their missing husbands. When they return to the beach singing, the women think they are drunk and retreat to mope.
When Anna and Mauno meet alone, the girl, egged on by Olli, hints at the other's female adventures. "Did they sell Anna of Roinila's fidelity for marks?", Mauno is offended and goes to dismiss himself to the host. Olli takes the liberty of proposing to Anna, who, bewildered, neither admits nor denies: "It doesn't matter, but I want revenge on Mauno." On leaving the house, Mauno humiliates Olli. The landlord wonders why, but reminds him that in Roinila, the word is given.
Eero and Matti take the car for a trip to the city. The village gossip Sanna hears the car stop on the bridge, sees something fall and then a man beating the water with a pole, and finds a hat with Eero's name on it. She thinks the man has been murdered and tells her belief to Olli, who brings the news to Roinila that Eero is dead. Based on Sanna's story, Olli develops a story that Mauno murdered Eero and stole his money because Eero has taken his bank book with him and a phone call to the bank confirms that 5000 marks have been withdrawn from the account. The host, Elli, and Anna do not believe the story, which Olli, assisted by Sanna, feeds to the sheriff.
Meanwhile, after dozens of futile attempts, Eero and Matti find Judge Pettersson, whom Matti recognizes from the way he walks down the street. The judge has an original will in which Ojala leaves everything to Elli, plus pensions for Matti and Leena, and a further 2000 marks for Matti to buy a compass and marine equipment. On their way home, the men meet Elli, who has gone in search of them on a motorbike and has driven into a ditch and has good news: she is the sole owner and hostess of Ojala. At the same time, a misunderstanding on the bridge is revealed: the wind has simply blown Eero's hat into the water.
Meanwhile, Sanna has seen Mauno and his motorbike on their way to Roinila and has alerted Olli, who in turn gathers the village men to capture Mauno. In Roinila, Mauno comes to an understanding with Sanna, although she still thinks he is the murderer until Mauno announces that no murder has taken place. The return of Eero, Elli, and Mati clears up the misunderstandings once and for all, and the notary who has been called in to deal with Mauno is able to take Olli, who has lost the copies of the will, into his care.
Amidst public rejoicing, Elli announces her engagement to Eero, 'the future master of Ojala'. Mauno, for his part, obtains the consent of the master of Roinila for his own engagement to Anna, and Matti invites Leena to join him in the car on the way to the vicarage. At the last minute, the master of Roinila also wants to come along, as Elli, as a minor, needs his permission as her guardian. "Look at these waving fields," the master says to the youngsters in the car. "Be loyal to the land of your ancestors. It will provide bread for you and your children."
