Old man in the army
Petey-101 February 2010
Technician Olavi Kaukonen is a war veteran.Yet somehow he gets an invitation to be drafted in the army. There has to be a mistake.Or maybe he has to go fight in the Suez.He goes in the barracks to find out and finds himself sharing a room with a group of young recruits. He's not too much liked, especially by a motorcyclist called Jaska. But he can't complain too much, since a beautiful girl named Liisa works at the captain's place.Vääpelin Kauhu (1957) is directed by Esko Töyri. He was also one of the cinematographers. The movie represents the military farce of the 50's and it's one of the seven films Fennada made of that genre in the years 1952-1958.Heikki Savolainen is terrific as Kaukonen.Lasse Pöysti, who also wrote the movie with Kaarlo Nuorvala, does excellent job as Jaska. This grand old man got the Betoni Jussi at last night's Jussi Awards for his achievements in movie business, that spans seven decades.Top that! Maija Karhi is brilliant as Liisa.Heikki Heino is great as Kapteeni Kärki.Leo Jokela is marvelous as Pena.Seppo Kolehmainen does very good job as Maisteri Gustaf Kukkola.Santeri Karilo plays Mr. Halla and Mirjam Salminen his wife.Pentti Viljanen is Turunen.Leni Katajakoski portrays Margit Kärki.Helge Herala plays the part of Olavi Kautonen.Pentti Irjala is Sergeant.Tommi Rinne is Corporal.Aimo Hiltunen plays Corporal.Keijo Komppa is seen as Sergeant.Pertti Palo is Guard and Pertti "Spede" Pasanen is Recruit. The film looks very 50's.In one scene the group dances and makes some rock'n roll sounds. It's quite funny funny when Kaukonen goes AWOL and is hidden in the captain's doghouse. Also when Jaska helps Mrs. Halla with her car problem. Then he is invited to her house, when the husband arrives. He hides under the bed, and they both snore loudly. This is some good old time fun that has been long gone.
