Synopsis

  • The elderly Shugfoot Rainey has been living in a rural small town in Texas with his common-law wife, Linda, for five years when their relationship is suddenly threatened by the arrival of Shug's sensuous niece, Jonelle, who is nicknamed 'Baby Doll'. As her 'Baby Doll' persona, Jonelle has been working for the past few years in New Orleans as a stripper/waitress at a local go-go bar. She receives a letter from her 'Uncle Chug' to return to Texas to take care of him and she accepts.

Jonelle arrives in the small Texas town, drawing stares from the locals over her modern Mod style of dress. When she arrives at the Rainey household, competition arises between the two women for Shugfoot's love and money.

After visiting a local lawyer named Mr. Lewis, Linda then confronts Shugfoot and reminds him that she can prove the legality of their common-law marriage with a motel receipt from the first night they spent together. As a result, Linda throws Jonelle out of the house.

With nowhere to go, Jonelle temporarily moves in with her sister Brenda and her husband Jody, who is the town sheriff. Jody is trying to hide from Brenda his past one-time romance he had with Jonelle before she left town. Jonelle, who is interested only in money, performs a striptease in a restaurant and becomes involved with Bull, the local moonshiner who beats up Jody and takes Jonelle to his shack in the swamp where he shows her his moonshine distillery.

Jonelle tries to persuade Bull to help her kill Shugfoot Rainey by making a jug of whiskey which is poisoned with cyanide. After returning back to town, Jonelle tries to seduce Sheriff Jody into helping her, but Brenda walks in on them in the bedroom just as they are about to have sex, and she retaliates by throwing Jonelle out of the house, with her suitcase and all.

Jonelle returns to the Rainey mansion and gives Linda the jug of poisoned whiskey. When Shugfoot takes a drink from it, he collapses and dies. Linda realizes that Jonelle was at least partially responsible for Shugfoot's death and later that night confronts Jonelle at the local bar. After Linda cons Jonelle into riding to see her "dying" uncle, Linda pushes her out of the moving car and shoots her. Linda then kills herself by drinking the poisoned whiskey.
