The Legend of 1900

Edit

Factual errors

The immigrant girl that 1900 falls in love with is seen disembarking the Virginian at a pier in New York and passing through an immigration line in the process of becoming a US citizen. At the time, most ocean liners dropped immigrants off at Ellis Island before they docked in New York.
There is no reason to blast an old ocean liner in the middle of the sea, unless it's being made into an artificial reef. Usually the metal of the ships is too valuable and is sold as scrap. Also, if it were going to be made into a reef, it would most likely be scuttled instead of exploded, as it would be cheap and easy to do.

Revealing mistakes

When the passengers first see the Statue of Liberty, it is shown reflected in the sea. However, the reflection appears to be an image of the statue laid flat on the surface of the water, whereas a real reflection should appear to extend straight down below the surface.

Anachronisms

The recording equipment used for making the record was clearly acoustic in nature, showing large horns. This type of recording was largely replaced in 1925 by electrical recording, using microphones. Yet the recording was made somewhere between 1927 and 1933, according to Tooney's story. Furthermore, the recording engineer played back the matrix immediately; this would have ruined the matrix, which was cut in wax. In those days, immediate playback was only possible using a second set of equipment especially for that purpose.

Errors in geography

At the beginning of the film, the immigrants are happy to be entering America through New York. However, the ship is shown passing from right to left in front of the Statue of Liberty. This would be taking them out of New York harbor, not into it.
At the 2:03:10 mark in the original version, when the Virginian is entering New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty is facing the wrong way, towards Staten Island. Liberty Island appears to be too close to Manhattan and Ellis Island is missing. Also, Fort Wood, which the statue's pedestal is on, is absent from Liberty Island.

Character error

When Danny names Novecento, he claims 1900 is the first year of the 20th century. Given that there was never a year 0, however, 1900 is actually the last year of the 19th century. This is a technicality, however, and most people view a year that ends in zero as the start of a new decade or century. Danny the black stoker would be no exception to this way of thinking.
