Bill Paxton, Bridget Fonda, and Billy Bob Thornton in A Simple Plan (1998)

Goofs

A Simple Plan

Edit

Continuity

Directly after a shot of the full moon, when Hank is lying in bed, the scrape on his forehead moves from above the right eye to above the left eye.
In an early scene, the Mitchells appear to look straight out their bedroom window to watch Jacob's pickup coming up the driveway, but a later outdoor shot of the house shows no front window that would provide quite that same view; further, the front windows are a different style.
Damage to front of pickup truck after hitting tree.

What about it? Bumper damage consistent with hitting the tree is seen for the first time when it's parked at Lou's house (01:11:55)
Exterior and interior of Hank's house don't match. There is no upper story window overlooking the driveway.
When Hank and Jacob are sitting in the car, the window is up, but when Jacob gets out, the window is down.

It only looked like it was down because the car moved and reflection off it was gone. Then, with vision through the window unimpeded, it looked like there was no glass there.

Factual errors

The corpse in the plane is not frozen solid.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

In the living room after the bar visit someone is holding a beer can. In the following shot there is a bottle in his hands.

At 01:10:22, Lou is sitting in his chair with both a can and a bottle at his elbow, plainly visible. He was alternating his drinks.
Vacant farmhouse has little snow on roof.

The steeply pitched roof is slanted like that just for that purpose, so snow will not accumulate. Also, it was early in the season and not much snow had fallen yet, as can be seen by not much snow anywhere.
In an early scene, Jacob's pickup is coming up the driveway, but the tire tracks at the top of the screen indicate it was parked there prior to it snowing.

The tire tracks indicate where Hank's car and possibly other cars had been in the driveway. There's no indication of a vehicle parking on the street.

Revealing mistakes

A funeral scene in the latter half of the movie takes place in the middle of winter, but is a full burial service. In Minnesota, as is the case with other northern locales where the ground is frozen for several months of the year, the funeral for someone who died in the winter would occur in two parts: a "real-time" memorial service followed by spring interment.
At the end of the film while burning the money, it's clearly visible on one stack of bills that they are for motion picture use only.
There is no rearview mirror in Carl's truck. This is noticeable when the three men are on their way to the downed plane.
In an early scene, Jacob's pickup is coming up the driveway, but the tire tracks at the top of the screen indicate it was parked there prior to it snowing.

Plot holes

Banknotes cannot be tracked across borders, so if Hank and Sarah had moved out of the country they would have been able to spend the money freely.

In 1998, banknotes could not be tracked *anywhere*. FBI Agent Renkins said five thousand (1 out of 10) serial numbers were recorded. If they got stopped at a border with over ten thousand dollars, they'd be cooked. On top of all that, they'd have to live by spending US $100 bills in a foreign country. After the first million or so, people would get suspicious.
