Summaries

  • In nineteenth century rural England, a German hussar serving with King George III's personal cavalry, Matthaus Singer, falls madly in love with the only daughter of a West Country solicitor, Frances Groves.
  • The spectacular scenery of Wessex and the Dorset coast provides the backdrop for this adaptation of a Thomas Hardy short story. Set in nineteenth century rural England, this is the story of forbidden romance between a German hussar serving with King George III's personal cavalry, Matthaus Singer, and the only daughter of a West country solicitor, Frances Groves. The German legion is encamped on the downs as the threat of war with Napoleon looms. Matthaus longs for his homeland and Frances is trapped in an interminable engagement to one of her father's business associates, Humphrey Gould. Illicit meetings between Frances and Matthaus flare into a passionate affair as each searches for escape and happiness. Were they to be discovered, she would be branded a soldier's whore and he a disgrace to his regiment...—Anonymous
  • A tale of forbidden romance based on a short story by Thomas Hardy. Deserting German hussar, Matthaus Singer (Jean-Marc Barr) falls madly in love with solicitor's daughter Frances Groves (Emma Fielding) whereby she is torn between her duty and her desire. Frances's father (Jack Shepherd) would prefer her to marry the weaselly suitor Humphrey (John Sessions). The passion flows but will the heart be stronger than the outside forces set on keeping the lovers apart?—Anonymous
  • Frances Groves, daughter of a solicitor, is betrothed to her father's awkward, older, and unattractive business associate. Matthaus Singer--sensitive, conflicted, poetry-reading German hussar--is camped with his squadron on the Groves' land. The inevitable romance between the two puts them both at tremendous risk as they are caught between their love for each other and their incompatible places in society.—Anonymous
