Near the beginning of the film, the family car is shown driving from Toronto supposedly to Nova Scotia. The SkyDome is shown in the background with the car clearly driving west on the Gardiner Expressway. You would drive east to Nova Scotia on that highway; there is no shortcut going west from there.
