This is a dignified transfer from the Nikos Kavvadias novel named "Li". Marion Hänsel made a very serious movie about seamen, their thoughts, their loneliness as traveling around the world and their concerns about their wasted life in sea.
The two protagonists (Nikos and Li),in my opinion are both perfect acting their roles. I was not expecting so much expressiveness because i consider these roles very difficult.
The Hong Kong scenes are nice and the light changes from scene to scene (depends the mood) creates the right senses to the viewer. From the dark cabin to the extra lighted end scene which Nikos throws the letter from the ship glad to go back home to his pregnant wife, leaves to the viewer an optimistic side of life.
