Low Budget and Silly
jamesohnemus25 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I was actually in this film, uncredited as an extra. You can see me in the bank scenes, sitting behind the principal actors in a dark jacket pretending to do paperwork.

The bank scenes were filmed in Fullerton, at the Chapman building on Harbor Blvd, back when it was Pioneer Bank. The crew was pretty unfamiliar with how to film a lot of the shots they wanted. The camera-man seemed particularly perturbed when I told them you can't film a computer monitor without a filter or it appears to flicker. They didn't believe me and shot the sequence anyway - hence what you see in the final film.

I watched about 80% of this film and didn't care for it. What should have been an engaging idea was treated without taste and respect. The fight scene near the end when John head-butts another guy is so fake as to be ridiculous. The highlight for me was the 3 seconds outside the bank when we see Torkel, our then resident homeless man, playing himself. Too bad he didn't get screen credit - he was the most real character in the film.

better than most movies made for 10 times the money

I happened upon this movie at a friends house who is friends with the writer /director of the movie and he asked me to watch it. He was bragging that his friend made this movie for under 200k and that it was better than most movies 10 times the cost. At this point I was not expecting much from the movie which is not a good way to start .

The movie started interesting enough with a taping of women who were talking about their sexual history. This was an interesting start to the movie it then makes sense as you see a beautiful psychiatrist who looks like a sharon stone look-alike watching tapes of these woman who are in her practice. The movie than moves to the main character who is a handsome guy named John played by Gary Hudson who is a con man who gains womans confidence and then takes their money and leaves them.

I never have seen this actor before but he obviously identified with the material and was incredible as the sweetheart scammer. Looking on imdb after the movie checking his career it seems that he got typecast as a thug or a burned out Vietnam veteran. This is a shame because this guy is a very talented actor who clearly has some range. The story chronicles his exploits with several woman and different identities he uses each time to con them out of their money. The back story is that he is also a patient of the psychiatrist from the beginning of the movie. Their clearly is a sexual attraction and tension between these two characters and this makes for some great dialogue. There is many interesting twists in the movie and the ending is quite different leaving you with several scenarios to think about which I liked since most movies try to wrap everything in a neat little package.

The director gave this movie alot of style considering the low budget of the movie. There is a good deal of sexual scenes in the movie done in a very tasteful almost artful way that was interesting to me as well for this kind of film. So I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and have now seen it several times at my friends house. I checked out the director Kurt mac carley on imdb since I really like this small low budget movie hoping to find other movie of his figuring that perhaps he has gone on to bigger movies since clearly he has some talent. However, evidently this was his only movie he directed he did produce some other movie with a pretty good cast called the real thing which I am looking for but have not found. Anyone reading this will clearly realize that I am not a film reviewer but since my friend turned me on to this movie I promised him I would get post on imdb I give this movie a 7 out of ten . I would recommend anyone who likes independent movies to try to find it and give it a try.
