Rats, and Darts, and Suspects, Oh My!

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this episode several times before reading the book and, as always, I'm amazed at how well the screenplay did in keeping the essence of Marsh's writing while refining certain points to work better on the screen. For the most part, the changes work quite well: the use of the collection box as the hiding place for the poisoned iodine and the catching of Legge red-handed, so to speak, at the end were most satisfactory. The use of flashbacks was also effective because otherwise there would have been a lot of dialogue describing what happened instead of actually showing the viewer what took place

There were also some changes I didn't understand, the biggest one being the broadly hinted at relationship between Norman and Sebastian. In the book, Norman proposes to Decima! Other changes are minor but also puzzling: the name of the town is changed, Miss Duffy and Mr. Legge both have different monikers, and in the book Decima is the daughter of a farmer and Will is the son of the innkeeper.

There were also a few scenes I wish had been included: seeing Alleyn swarm his way under the jetty to eavesdrop on Duffy and Legge as well as him blaring away at a placid Fox after Fox refuses to rest after being poisoned would have been quite entertaining, but I can understand why they were changed. Another thing to note is the camera-work. Even the scene shot in the hospital hallway makes a masterful use of the streaming light. The scenes in the village are even better. If there weren't so many rats around, it would be a great place to visit! Definitely worth watching.

Top Winterbottom

I watch a lot of these BBC-produced mystery series. Its one of the few things from the TeeVee side that I can stand, though regular readers of my comments are used to me being disappointed by many of them.

Its because the BBC formula is fairly strict and apparently based on solid market research about how viewers want to spend their time unwinding after a work day. The problem is that these are mysteries and the way the mystery component is handled is dreadful, ordinarily. What they turn into is a storytelling form that has a surprise ending that we know is coming.

We aren't given enough clues to guess; we aren't supposed to. We are just supposed to enjoy the dessert when served. So what it boils down to is whether the writer and filmmaker merge into competent storytellers.

The director in this case is Michael Winterbottom, someone who knows his business. That makes this one of the very best made of any BBC mystery episodes. It really is superb and I recommend it. I came to this particular one because of Winterbottom, despite knowing that Ms Marsh's stories are inherently uncinematic. But this story is not hers and the combination of writer and director is quit sublime.

The way the story is told is a matter of flashes back and forward, blinking vision, confusing snippets, seeing and not seeing.

Winterbottom is a solid talent and he has given us something quite masterful where you have no reason to expect it.

Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.

Warning: Spoilers
I did not like this at all.

A barrister get poisoned that is a friend of Inspector Alleyn and he tries to find out what happened. The barrister, Luke Watchman also has a thing for a girl named Decima who is dull and and snotty. The dead man and another man are jealous of each other because of her.

Half way through the video a artist and the cousin of Luke are homosexuals and share the same bed. I don't like this.

Inspector Alleyn tries to be like Inspector Hathway in "Lewis". He starts quoting some author to make us believe he is smart. He is cute but no Hathaway.

So on with the story.

His accent!

As much as i enjoy a good period who done it, the one thing that grates with these stories is Patrick Malahides accent. It sounds like someone trying to put on a posh accent. I've heard him on the radio, and he doesn't sound like this at all!
