Dramatic war, dramatic movie
earendil-118 September 2001
This movie tells the story of a little republican resistance during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It's a dramatic story (like the Civil War was) and there are popular Spanish actors like Sancho Gracia, "Tito" Valverde or the great Javier Bardem; but the movie isn't much known: I saw it on TV late at night, but I found it interesting.

Dramatic and fictitious recreation on tragical events happened in Galicia about the significant period known as The Spanish Civil War

So-so Spanish film dealing with the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and a strong confrontation . Mediocre warlike movie is filled with thrills , intrigue , intense drama , and breathtaking confrontations . Dramatic and moving film that develops the tragic events of two rebel men : Sancho Gracia and Tito Valverde during the Spanish Civil War .The film is set in Spanish Civil War on the Galician front , a hard fight carried out by two extremely fighter armies : the Nationalist troops led by General Francisco Franco and Republican ones led by General Rojo and Negrin . Some common people , quarry workers and family are forced to rebellion due to wrong and abusive deeds . They do not hesitate to throw themselves into the mountains before the abuse of the caciques with their women to the clandestine fight . As a group of men, because of the Spanish civil war, has been trapped in the mountains persecuted by the army and the Civil Guard . Juan (Sancho Gracia) , a mature anarchist , and Marcial (Tito Valverde) , a young rebel , have two different views of life and the war situation they are experiencing, but they are united by the same circumstances, during a bloody battle , although that will not be enough to keep them together . At his side, two women, (Maria Uxía Blanco) , Marcial's wife, and Luisa (Sara Mora), Juan's lover , will be shaken by the same situation, victims of despair , general frustration and their struggles against ruthless land owners (Francis Lorenzo) . While happens the uprising , the Republican soldiers take refuge in the woods and after at a rural countryside with other people who are also hiding . After a violent stand-off , the surviving Marcial arrives in a lonely rural house inhabited by Elena (Esther Del Prado) , her husband (Pedro Díez del Corral) and his sister (Lola Baldrich) , but due to jealously and envy , things go wrong .

Very mediocre and sad war film dealing with the misfortunes of two rebels on the nationalitst front . It has a message of sacrifice against a fraticide war and understanding the futility of a civil confrontation, but being badly paced . As the main issue of the movie is the peculiar reunion of the two protagonists , at the beginning they meet and subsequently love and hate each other to death , but the circumstances make that both spend time under the same roof , which will lead them to talk , help each other better and to think otherwise ; subsequently together they will spend the last hours of their lives. The flick is benefited by adequate interpretations , some nice action scenes , nail-biting drama, and impressive battle scenes .The picture is partially based on historic events , though it has some inventions and including well recreated settings carried out by production designer . But it is not quite complete , neither as a portrait of a period and deeds , nor as an action film . In my opinion, what seems to be the director intention is to make an action war drama with a western atmosphere , accompanying the beautifully photographed Galician landscapes and the magnificent setting and the enjoyable list of actors who set the show in motion . However , containing a poor , incongruous , absurd plot , without any chronology ; despite the careful work by actor Fernando Valverde who includes some nudity scenes in the river . The essential problem with this film is the transcendental tone with which it is shot , expressions of the actors , annoying musical score and artificially developed dramatic situations , which in a certain way is reminiscent of an episode by Curro Jiménez in terms of treatment of the action , change Frenchmen for civil guards and adding a bit of slow-motion in the action scenes , devoid of the playful load that the adventures of the bandolero Curro Jiménez used to have, despite which it has its entertaining moments with some breathtaking action scenes . The ideology that it gives off will have its unconditional supporters and its detractors , but seen from a strictly cinematic point of view, the only interest that its vision has is as a curiosity or follow-up to the acting work of some of those involved with a plethora of prestigious but wasted actors.

The motion picture was middlingly directed by the really professional actor Sancho Gracia in his film debut . He was born in 1936 in Madrid and died in 2012 and being father of the notorious actor Rodolfo Sancho . Sancho Garcia was a veteran actor and producer with a long career from the Sixties , known for El crimen del padre Amaro (2002), and 800 balas (2002) , El robo más grande jamás contado (2002) , La caja 507 (2002) , El furgón (2003) El oro de Moscú (2002) and especially for Curro Jiménez series (1976) , among others . Huidos (1993) rating : 4.5/10 , very average flick . Only for Sancho Gracia followers .
