Almost excellent

' Uncle Vanya ' is one of my favourite plays, and as I revere it so much I expect to be gripped and excited by that. I saw this with hesitation as David Mamet was involved, and he always disappoints me. This time I was happy with what I saw and recognised that it was a serious interpretation, which for me was fine, but the casting jarred a bit. Ian Holm was excellent and so was David Warner in the role of Vanya. I have seen Warner in very few things and I feel I must have missed out in my life, especially in his theatre work. The scene with the famous gun was not played as black humour, and I have seen such productions and have not laughed. But sadly for me I felt the actor who played Sonia was miscast. She is supposed to be plain, but I saw a beautiful young woman and not only that I felt she was underpowered in the final speech of the play, which for me is the most moving in any play that I can think of. I also noticed a hint of an American accent in the actor who played Yelenya and despite her very good performance it irritated. I give it a 9 as it was overall very good, bordering on the excellent. It is on YouTube.

I was seduced by its gentle - soft beauty. The bitterness of play reflected in the fair nuances, the touching - precise portrait of Vanya crafted, so carefull and rich in accents by David Warner and a great Ian Holm , proposing to his character the honest mix of dessillusion, innocence and try to give some form to ersaz of happiness , not ignoring reality but knowing too well the taste of its roots.

Uncle Vanya , in a special way, is one of great portraits of deep , empty loneliness.

Exactly the walls of this cage are wise exposed in this adaptation and this makes it just special.

A family in contryhouse. Exercise of seduction and change of two men, a young woman and her husband as a ball of apparences. A doctor and a young girl loving him. And, sure, just Vanya .

The end as one of the most touching sundowns.
