Action thriller in which a terrorist plot threatens the lives of thousands in Israel and a reporter sets out to expose a complex political cobweb
ma-cortes28 June 2013
Mike Anderson (hunky Dolph Lundgren) is a known American reporter dispatched to investigate a mysterious and fatal attack on an overseas US naval base, Anderson, a leading investigative journalist and ex-US marine, finds himself back on familiar ground. Instinct makes him question the official CIA explanation told by CIA chief Jackson (Oscarized secondary Louis Gosset Jr) that cites an unknown terrorist group called Black October (Black September-alike) . Terrorist attacks on US military based in Israel are just the smokescreen for a great threat . Alone, and armed only with his combat training and determination to uncover the truth, the journalist attempts to find out a risked political web . Renewing a fiery affair with his ex-Iover Susan Clifford (Lisa Berkley , in her first and last film), now the US Embassy press attachee, he soon finds himself taking on an old adversary . And when his former marine colleague Colonel John Cooper (John Finn of Cold case) suffers a terrorist attack after a secret rendezvous with him, Mike realises he holds the pieces to a deadly plot . If the lies don'd kill you , the truth will will ¡ .

This exciting though below-par Actioner packs suspense , car chases , thrills , noisy action , political intrigue and violence . Boring pace with its ups and downs ; stands out only for ending scenes when takes place the attempt terrorist in 11th station , ¨Via Crucis¨ and Holy Tomb . Picture reveals an alarmingly realist insight into US-Middle Eastern politics and terrorism since the 2000s, dealing with a al-Qaeda-esque terrorist organization and the conspiracy theories that some believe the US government is using the Middle East as a cover-up . The highlights of the movie result to be the battles to save the lives of thousands of innocent people, in a desperate attempt to prevent a deadly plan to create an international disaster of catastrophic proportions , as in a race against time Lundgren confronts a terrorist scheme in the God Friday climax , including hokey religious symbolism . The scene where Dolph Lundgren's character runs through the mass of people during the Easter celebration was shot during an actual enactment by pilgrims of the twelve stations of Christ. Hidden cameras were used to get the footage, and a pair of incognito Israeli National Squad paratroopers followed Lundgren for his protection. None the less pilgrims and tourists thought his fake blood was an actual wound, and "real" soldiers pointed M16 guns at Lundgren and got him down on the ground as they had not been well informed of the film production .

Regular acting by Dolph Lundgren as a two-fisted American journalist on a dangerous foreign assignment, finds his own life in jeopardy when he uncovers a deadly labyrinth of political intrigue , better is Lous Gosset Jr as CIA boss Lou Jackson. William Tannen, who had written the script and was in the final stages of preparation in Israel to begin shooting in one week, was replaced because the lead actor decided that the script he signed on to do was no longer viable and that he began to do a major rewrite ; Tannen actually said the word "No" and was excused by the Israeli producer, a former prop man. The picture failed at box office and released theatrically worldwide except in the United States and United Kingdom . The movie was incidentally produced before the Gulf War started . In France, the distributor delayed the release by six months because of the conflict . The motion picture was middlingly directed by Manny Coto ; writer William Tannen was to direct the film, director Manny Coto got hired only one or two weeks before principal photography . Manny is a notorious producer , writer an occasionally director as TV as cinema , such as ¨Zenon¨, ¨Star Kid¨, ¨Dr Giggles¨, ¨Red Schizo¨and this ¨Cover up¨

Dolph fans will still appreciate Cover Up, and it makes a good one-time watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Mike Anderson (Dolph) is an ex-Marine, now an investigative journalist based in L.A. He travels to Israel to try to get the story on some murders at a military base. A terrorist group called Black October is claiming responsibility, but is that the whole story? Anderson also is attempting to get to the truth through CIA operative Lou Jackson (Gossett Jr.) It seems Anderson is getting close, because several attempts are made on his life. He must uncover the conspiracy before it's too late. Can he do it? It seems Cover Up was an attempt by Dolph to do something a bit more "respectable". There's certainly nothing wrong with trying to change things up and attempting to break away from typecasting - it's just that Cover Up is kind of on the dour, dark and dry side. He's more than entitled to try something different, but it's just a shame that it's this - because it's still trying to keep one foot in the action world with some blow-ups, and maybe some mild shooting and fighting - but it's not entirely a straight drama either. Despite the more serious-minded tone of the film, Dolph still manages to appear shirtless for no apparent reason. Some things can't change, apparently.

If Dolph really wanted to break away from the cycle of action movies he was doing at the time, he probably shouldn't have re-teamed with Louis Gossett Jr. after The Punisher (1989). Not that we mind, of course, they make a fine team, but what action remains in this movie is too close to his old work, yet not far enough away to separate himself from it. In Dolph's defense, it's a tough line to straddle. And he does look very cool with his cigar. It really makes you think Gossett was supposed to appear in The Peacekeeper (1997) to make a Dolph/Gossett trilogy, but instead Montel Williams of all people showed up to fill the role.

A good example of how this is an atypical Dolph movie comes when there is a scene in a pool hall, and all they do is talk and play pool. In any other movie, punches, kicks and pool cues would be flying. But Mike Anderson is a reporter, you see, not a fighter. Although he is "ex-military" (classic cliché we all love). So what about that? Presumably it explains what fighting does occur later in the movie.

The Israel locations are some of the highlights of the movie (and are shot very well by the cinematographer). The King David hotel, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, among other sites in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are on show. The climax during the religious procession also gets the local flavor very well. Cover Up may be lacking in overall excitement, but as a travelogue there's certainly something to see.

To keep things in perspective, Cover Up is much better than The Last Warrior (2000), Agent Red (2000) and Detention (2003). Cover Up is really not even a bad movie, just a bit on the dull side. Dolph seemed to realize this, because he came roaring back into classic form with his next movie after this, Showdown In Little Tokyo (1991), one of his best and a Comeuppance Reviews favorite. Dolph fans will still appreciate Cover Up, and it makes a good one-time watch.

One of Dolph Lundgren's worst
gridoon202424 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The people who made "Cover Up" made the mistake of casting the imposing but wooden Dolph Lundgren as a reporter / political scientist(!); they gave him a lot of lines, when he looks more comfortable flaunting his chest muscles and killing people with his bare hands (or with weapons). There is one good fight scene, one good stunt (at the very end), and one good explosion; other than that, the film is so dull it could put you into a coma. * out of 4.

Perfect bargain bin fodder
STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs

This is an early feature of Dolph Lundgren's,that was ,weirdly enough, made after the likes of The Punisher and Masters of the Universe. It's probably one of his better movies though. There is a complex and intriguing plot to follow that requires you to use your brain (a blessing for a Dolph film),and, although director Manny Coto allows the action to slack a bit, things certainly heat up at the end. There is an unfortunate lack of engaging dialogue for Dolph and the rest of the cast to work with and the ending is the very definition of anti climatic, but generally speaking, and certainly in comparison to a lot of other films of it's ilk, this one's great to pick up for £2.99,take home and enjoy with some crisps and beers.***

"If the lies don't kill you the truth will" – The truth is that this movie sucks
Maziun28 December 2014
Dolph Lundgren ("Rocky 4") and Louis Gossett Jr ("Officer and gentleman") reunite. After fun action movie "Punisher" this stinky little thriller is massive disappointment. Robert Cettl argues in his 2009 book "Terrorism in American cinema: an analytical filmography, 1960-2008" that the film reveals an alarmingly realist insight into US-Middle Eastern politics and terrorism since the 2000s, dealing with a al-Qaeda-esque terrorist organization and the conspiracy theories that some believe the US government is using the Middle East as a cover-up. Maybe it's true , maybe not. The movie still sucks.

Lundgren wanted this movie to be different than his earlier movies. I really understand the need to make something else than action movie , I really do. However Lundgren simply isn't convincing as a journalist , much less as a journalist that can't fight (it's simply unbelievable that someone looking like Lundgren wouldn't know how to fight). Lundgren is also not bad action movie star , but when you put him in a role that REALLY requires acting skills (like the one here) he will be painless to watch. Louis Gossett Jr is here reliable as always.

The plot here is incredibly simplistic and predictable. It's annoying that "Cover up" never really explains why and how something are happening here. There is very little action and it's definitely forgettable. Only the suspenseful climax with ambiguous ending is somewhat memorable.

"Cover up" is slow , dull , actionless and just plain bad. I give it 1/10.

Watchable but still abit too dull & too slow!!!
lukem-527607 July 2021
Dolph Lundgren & Louis Gossett Jr had a much better team up with the Cult Classic THE PUNISHER!!!

Action legend Dolph tries to do a more slow-paced Suspenseful Thriller than his usual gritty Action-packed type & it just feels dull & boring to be honest.

Cover-up isn't a terrible film it's just very slow & unexciting & i so wanted Dolph to pull out the big guns & blow something up lol but here he plays an investigative reporter sent to Jerusalem to check out why an American military base was blown up & by who? There's plenty of Cheesiness & just a very laziness to everything that happens & nothing happens often. It's supposed to be a twisty conspiracy Thriller but it just gets bogged down with too many really boring scenes.

Gossett Jr is a fine actor is still decent here in his small part but nothing could save the tired pace of a this dull flick.

Dolph actually does feel out of place in this low-key role & the film really does feel low-budget & thats not usually a problem as many Awesome films have been cheap to make but this is a very dull one.

Run for cover...
fmarkland328 August 2006
Dolph Lundgren and Louis Gossett Jr reunite (I'm guessing because after The Punisher, there was a huge demand to see Ivan Drago team up with Chappy Sinclair to beat on more bad guys.)in Cover-Up a movie about a chemical weapon being taken by terrorists who then look to use this mysterious chemical to wipe out fifty thousand people during Good Friday. However there is a conspiracy in the works...in that conspiracy lies in the fact that for some unfathomable reason Louis Gossett Jr and Dolph Lundgren agreed to be in this lame thriller. Yes i'm saying this material is below even Dolph Lundgren. I had recently discussed this movie with E-Filmcritic writer David Corneilus who wrote an article about Oscar winners who should send back their gold statue, naming Louis Gossett Jr as a worthy contender for the fact that he was in Firewalker with Chuck Norris, The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren (Which even though how fun it is, it is beneath Gossett's talent), Iron Eagle (Likewise) and Toy Soldiers with Keith Coogan. I reminded him of this movie which I said he had actually worked twice with Dolph Lundgren. His reply was of "YIKES, forgot about that one, for good reason." Yes indeed.

I had seen Cover-Up back when it came out, back when I was 18 and for the most part didn't remember it leaving much of an impression in one way or another. Now years later on rewatch, all one can say is how truly grotesque the movie is in it's ineptitude. Part of the problem is that it has Dolph Lundgren. I know someone might get the impression that am taking a swing on an obvious target but I do want to say that Lundgren has always been far more likable in presence than Seagal. Cover-Up has Lundgren basically run around wussified and not even once throwing a punch until near the end of the movie. It is nothing short of hilarious when Lundgren tries hard to convey emotion in which he flexes his eyebrows and speaks in the same monotone he did in any other movie he was in. Indeed Lundgren seems half asleep the whole time, even when being interrogated by Louis Gossett Jr and he won an Oscar for playing a drill instructor. Then of course there is Louis Gossett Jr who plays the role so by the numbers you could intertwine this with any other movie he has done. Although Gossett Jr manages to provide an unintentional laugh in how he goes off in a huge speech about "Not starting your own revolutions as you see FIT!" It is a parade of bad acting in which Gossett Jr comes off the best and Lundgren coming off second best. (Not good) The whole movie itself is just a bunch of useless talk about who is planning on killing whom, despite the fact we know all of this and in its content the movie fails to really come up with a credible reason of what is going on and what the bad guy truly wants to accomplish. In other words it is slow, dull and just plain bad. People rack on The Punisher that starred both Lundgren and Gossett but at least that movie moved. Cover-Up just remains inert in the moronic plot threads it weaves. The tag-line of this clunker says "If the lies don't kill you the truth will..." Well if the truth doesn't kill you, watching this movie will.

Dolph Lundgren as Mike Anderson a L.A journalist who flocks to Israel to probe an attack on a U.S base where he finds a cover-up. Cover-Up is just an all around disappointment, the movie is simplistic, predictable and has hardly any action until the final 30 minutes. Considering that nobody has ever watched a Dolph Lundgren movie for anything but action only adds to the futile surroundings. However a suspenseful climax saves it from being a turkey.

As Generic As The Title Suggests
refinedsugar24 September 2023
'Cover-Up' starts with a slow title sequence meant to build atmosphere, but it's a low budget tactic. Prolong the running time and give you the sense that the following film is going to be intriguing. It's really not. Ultimately Dolph Lundgren & Lou Gossett Jr reteam after 'The Punisher' for a thriller that you can pass on without missing much.

An attack at a US Naval base in Israel supposedly by the terrorist group "Black October" leaves servicemen dead, but is really a cover for a high grade bio weapon to be stolen. Author & reporter Mike Anderson (Lungren) covers the story and when he starts to get too close to the bottom of things attempts are made on his life and various bodies drop. Jackson (Gossett) is the US official in charge who you're not sure what side he's on.

There's some b-movie charm here ... cliches you would say. Mike is a well known, likable guy. Plus he's an ex marine. He's good friends with Col. Cooper (John Finn) the man in charge of running the US base. He's also the ex lover of a civilian bureaucrat Susan Clifford (Lisa Berkely). He loses a game of pool purposely to gain info and after its shown how he's actually really good at the game. You get the picture.

If you follow the trail, you can figure out who the bad guy is early on. Strictly mediocre, but not like 'Cover-Up' ever tries to be something it ain't. Fans of Lundgren & Gossett don't have much to sink their teeth into. Although watching Dolph try to talk and bribe a hotel desk clerk who's already dead was amusing.

Dolph heads for the holy land!
Bezenby9 November 2012
Mike Anderson (Dolph Lungren) is an ex-marine reporter sent by the LA time to Tel Aviv to investigate the recent bombing of a US army base. There he meets his mate Cooper, who has now hooked up with Mike's ex. Mike sense that something isn't right with this attack, and he's right. A nerve gas has been stolen that can kill up to a square mile of people and it seems a shadowy group called Black October have stolen it. Mike sets out to find out what's up with the whole deal, and just exactly what Lou Gossett Junior has to do with it all.

Low on action but high in covert shenanigans, Cover Up is helped greatly by the fact that Lungren, unlike a lot of action stars, is also quite a likable actor to boot. Here he doesn't have too much to do except snoop around, avoid the CIA, and avoid being killed by assassins, but he does find time to sleep with his widowed ex, get into a car chase, and seemingly get into a very violent fight with an actor who greatly resembles Italian b-movie star John Stiener (who, in some sort of time slip, travelled forward in time from a movie set in Rome to kick Dolph's head in - weird).

There's your usual double and triple crosses, plus, for an action hero, Dolph really takes his licks here. I liked it for what it was, and when violence appears it's quite strong. Not bad for something to pass the time.

Cover up
coltras3520 November 2022
Reporter and former marine Mike Anderson (Lundgren) investigates following a deadly assault on a US military base which the CIA attributes to a terrorist organisation. However, with a powerful weapon missing, Mike believes something more sinister is afoot and soon finds himself coming face-to-face with an old foe, CIA man Lou Jackson (Gossett Jr), with the lives of thousands of people at stake.

Action-wise, 'Cover Up' is quite limited. A a couple of explosions, a couple of punch-ups and a decent car chase, that's it. It's more of a thriller with some drama and intrigue. Lundgren gets to play a slightly different type of character, and acts quite well; his interplay with Louis Gossett Jr. Is good. There's some good scenery, and a surprising twist at the end, but the film lacks pace, it's a bit too dullish, unexciting and talky - needed more punch, however it was slightly diverting with its intrigue and Lundgren's performance. Otherwise it's not something I would watch again in a hurry. A one time watch I would say.

Dolph lundgren's best
blackstonmichael10 March 2008
when i first bought this movie at the dollar bin at the video store, i wasn't sure how this movie is going to be but now i have to say, i'm a proud owner of cover-up.

Dolph lundgren's performance as mike Anderson was excellent. Lou gossett Jr give a good performance. john Finn from shows like Dawson's creek and cold case is surprisingly good. Lisa Berkley is sexy.

director Manny coto does a fine job keeping the story alive but there is a lit of bit lacking in the action department but this is worth seeing. i hope to see Dolph lundgren in more in the way of drama movies.

Great low budget action movie
BlackGas19 January 2007
Great rainy day film, and a gem from this period.

Not sure about the low ratings -- this is a solid action movie, and more, it's far more intelligent than a lot of similar movies from that time. An interesting, rather complex plot, and it's good and dark, something many of those other films lack.

I really liked the ending as well, not really what one expects from this kind of film and the final shot is quite memorable.

As far as this era of action films go, its an 8. In the bigger picture, still gets a six from me for being above average. Which is saying a lot, because most of these 80's/90's mercenary/military movies are 4's.

I first saw this on a tape of old cheesy movies a friend had made when they were a kid, and was surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember being quite creeped out during a scene where you see the effects of a deadly nerve gas on people. Check it out.

JUST OKAY - (6 stars out of 10)
BJG-Reviews30 April 2019
The stage curtains open ...

"Cover-Up", starring Dolph Lundgren as an ex-Marine turned journalist named Mike Anderson, and Louis Gossett Jr. as CIA agent, Lou Jackson, relies heavily on plot in a film that is more of a mind game than an action-thriller. Not your usual Lundgren film, it finds him playing detective in a race against time.

When a U.S. naval military base is bombed in Israel, Anderson is sent in to investigate and report his findings. While he is there, he runs into some familiar faces from his past, including his old flame, Susan Clifford, who is now working for the U.S. Embassy. As he digs deeper into the mystery behind the bombing which killed American soldiers, he finds that things run much deeper than what is initially believed to be the case. Now, he is in a race against time to prevent the death of thousands of innocent people, including a diabolical plan to do much, much worse.

This really wasn't that bad of a film. I wouldn't put this among Lundgren's best, but at the same time, it is a lot better than some movies he's done. The story is surprisingly intelligent and intricate with strong characters and decent acting. Lundgren really isn't known for his acting chops, but he shows some here and knows how to rein things in to keep in character and avoid becoming bigger than the story. The ending is a little hazy ... and without giving anything away, all I will say is that it's hard to tell if Mike Anderson survives the ordeal or not. I guess you would have to watch it to decide for yourself.

Even though the movie plays out well, it is still not one I would necessarily recommend. I feel that if you are a Dolph Lundgren fan and haven't yet seen this movie, you would probably enjoy it - keeping in mind that it is low on action and high on political intrigue. I think I would watch this again though. I had a good enough time to say that overall, it was enjoyable.

Unfairly maligned Top Notch Thriller
nicolailaros18 November 2021
"Cover-up, a political thriller from Manny Cotto (the director of Dr Giggles...) staring Dolph Ludgren (Rocky IV...): is this a joke or what?" was my first impression/question when I found this cheep DVD in a 0,50 Euros bench in a second-hand shop close to my place.

As a matter of fact, I didn't even know that this was THE Cover-up because on the french cover, I only could read "Impact" as title.... meeeh?

But then, wen I read the storyline, I rememberd that I already knew this movie from my former film-magasine called... "Impact"...lol... what an ironical coincidence, isn't it?!! And back in the nineties, they reviewed this title very positively, so I thought: "what possibly can go wrong?" and bought it right away!

Then at home, I figured out the (very) low rate on Imdb and was a bit dissapointed by many of the reviews here (still not sure we saw the same movie by the way).

But when I watched this perfectly well directed and acted movie, I understood why this isn't a movie for anybody: the criticism of the US governement strategies in Israel are for sure not that much enjoyed by "wrong channel switchers" and political correct addicts !

In fact, what we get here is a great ACTION/THRILLER movie, very well executed, happening in an uncommon place for a movie(yeah, it truely has been shot in Jerusalem), spectacular/fast paced and always very interresting to follow!

As a matter of fact, this is definitely on of the four best movies in which Dolph appears in the 80-90, along with Masters of the Universe (87), The Punisher (88), Dark Angel (90)! A feast for fans ...and a treat for other viewers!

Hey, c'mon guys, what more can you expect from a B movie with our beloved Dolph playing (&acting well!) an journalist (!!) and not using any weapon at all(!!!)... wow!

This is simply one of the very best and mostly unknown movies with this guy you may be suitable to find out there! Give it a try: you wont regret it!

Better than some think
alun-rundle7 June 2006
The problem with Dolph is that he can act a bit. He's no Top class actor, it's fair to say, but he's not the worst either. This was the first film where he seemed to want to prove he can act and he does it quite well. A pity he is typecast as an 'action' hero. He'd still do quite well in a big role in a major film. Possibly not the lead but a supporting role.

The film is also a little disturbing in how it shows now as some of the events depicted in the film have, seemingly, come to pass. Not in the way the film portrays them, true, but the effects globally have been largely the same.

Not too bad considering the budget
mooselundgren22 July 2001
Dolph Lundgren plays a journalist who investigates an attack on a US army base, and Louis Gosset Jr seems to be stonewalling the story and when Lundgren's best friend Cooper is murdered (John Finn) Lundgren know's he's in danger and now he must know what's real and what's fake. Minor out Ok little thriller with a few surprises.

Great idiocy!
RodrigAndrisan29 December 2019
One of the worst movies ever made, Manny Coto has nothing to do with what is called film art. Dolph Lundgren, Louis Gossett Jr. and all the other "actors" are just ... sorry. If you watch it at the cinema, you will want to kill the cashier to get your money back on the ticket. If you watch it at home, on the video cassette, DVD or Blu Ray, you will want to break the TV or/and destroy the player. A waste of time!

Greatest Film Ever Made
brandonleeeberhart4 November 2016
Here we have the film Lethal Weapon except it is not that film, but similar.

In this filmed story about humans, Dolph plays a guy who has a friend and they both watch people fall on horizontal bullets.

Thus we can surmise that Dolph can bend space and bullets to his will Lo and Behold I said this years ago and no one believed me so guess what Mrs. Wisowski? (my 9th grade Engrish teacher) BOOM I win and your life is pointless.

Pointless. Like a triangle.

Decent change of pace for Lundgren!
supertom-323 July 2004
This is a fairly well written and involving thriller. Unfortunately its good early work is slightly let down by either obvious or absurd twists in the final 15 minutes. Before the slightly disappointing ending the film moves along nicely, and the script is developing well, while there aren't too many B-movie cliches, such as the obligatory sex scene, between a recently widowed woman and the central character. This was Dolph Lundgrens first real move away from the action genre and he gives his first decent lead performance, he has more than 3 lines of dialogue as well, but he does fairly well. The film unfortunately looks very cheap but the direction from Manny Coto is functional and well paced, while the action scenes are good, including a trademark Vic Armstrong car chase. ***

Some people should be honest - they don't like this movie for unnamed reasons.
SaintNinja10 April 2023
Early Dolph's movies are magical. He is not acting - he is convincing enough. "Cover Up" is a political thriller not suitable for Dolph at all, but it works in mysterious ways! I like it, believe it or not. It is one of those simple movies that can't be remade - too much wind of time, to many signs of an era. Just imagine: a guy from Sweden, chemistry student, Karate champion, friend of Andy Warhol. Lover of Grace Jones, Studio 54 party man, Russian Red Machine and etc - plays in a movie about government conspiracy and terror attacks in Israel. How can you beat that? No wonder Soviet Union collapsed the same year.
