Pure VHS Rental Fodder From The Late 80's
mantisfist626 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Back in the day, before I got into the 16-bit gaming consoles, I'd grab a couple of quid from the Parents, and pop to the video rental store.

Being a massive kung fu movie fan (having seen King Boxer in 1986 at the tender age of 10) I tried to rent out at least 2 movies a week. Luckily the shop I went into didn't really care that much about a video's 'rating', but then again even the very tamest martial arts movie seemed to incur an '18' certificate from the BBFC!! So I was watching 'proper' kung fu films, whilst my friends thought the fight scenes in the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles cartoon were the absolute be all and end all!

So, what's Death Cage like then, coming from someone who has watched at least 1000 kung fu films over the years....?

Well, it's extremely disappointing.

I didn't get to see it back in the day, although I remember the trailer (now nearly 27 years later), and it must have shown somethings that stuck in my mind. The version I just finished watching was clearly not the same one that was floating about back then over here in England. This one was widescreen, and was dubbed into Cantonese (which always makes Caucasian actors look hilarious), and so was probably closer to the version shown in Hong Kong.

The main plot it cliché-ridden. Good, moralistic kung fu teacher has young and precocious student. They fall foul of a rival martial arts school, run by some very out of place 'white folk', who effectively cheat to win the opening battle of the movie, and cripple the teacher, and badly injure the student.

Cue soul searching, training with another (related) kung fu teacher (who gets killed.... Natch), leading up to the big finale. Throw in a very forced love triangle between young student and both the teacher's daughters (yawn), and it's nothing you've not seen done better many times in the past.

However.... It is actually worth watching. The fight scenes are quit dynamic, and the 2 on 1 girl fight is a definite highlight. I can't speak for the English dub, of course, but if it's as comedic as the Cantonese attempt, it is surely an absolute classic.

Clearly filmed on a budget of about £10, the sets look like they'll blow away in the wind, but the location filming is better than most.

Overall, if you can find this movie (it is on YouTube at present (26/02/16)), then feel free to indulge for 90 minutes. I can't guarantee you won't be disappointed, but I can say it's so bad it's actually quite good!

Sadly flat.

This was released in the UK as a completely unconnected sequel to the film Bloodfight, starring the one and only Bolo Yueng.

I say unconnected advisedly, as there really is no link between the two films whatsoever unless you take the basic shared premise of a martial arts tournament. Of course, if you do just that then virtually 50% of all martial arts films could be released with Bloodfight *insert number here* as a title however(!)

But I digress.....what of the film reviewed here?

Well sadly it's a typically formulaic tournament flick; the sort we have seen an infinitude of times before in fact.

Cliché ridden - check. Poorly acted - check. Horrible dubbing/voice over work - check. Yep it's all here. Having said this, I must admit that at least to begin with it did make me chuckle on quite a few occasions at it's sheer ineptitude although unfortunately, as it progresses it does tend to outstay it's welcome and it is then that the ineptitude so prevalent throughout which initially served to actually elevate the film, does sadly begin to drag somewhat.

In truth I can really only say four positive things about this flick: One is the presence of a pre Mortal Kombat Robin Shou (listed as Chou in this) who as always, looks in fantastic physical shape for his role. Secondly (and the main reason I watched this) this stars none other than real life kickboxing legend Joe Lewis as the head bad guy who always made me laugh when he appeared on screen with his constant and excessive usage of expletives. Thirdly the 'Death Cage' of the films title is indeed quite a cool looking arena laden with sharp spikes upon which to impale opponents...and finally, the film features some of the most hilariously poorly rendered usage of wire work I think I have ever seen which certainly made me laugh more than once.

What more can I say? A very low brow affair overall and probably only of any real interest for fans wishing to complete their collections of films featuring either Lewis or Shou. My best advise for anyone else is to skip this; trust me, you're not missing anything special.

Well, this sucks!!

An awful movie, but the fighting is not that bad, not if you compare it with Michal Dudikoff's performance in American Ninja... But this is not a good movie, i repeat, it sucks!!!!!! But if you team up with some of your friends in the evening and you watch it together, it is quite amusing:)

Warning: Spoilers
This is sometimes called "bloodfight 2" and being a glutton for punishment I checked this out too. Especially since none of the original actors or what even seems setting were in the first movie in the "series" so hence the title I'm using for this review. I'm just glad this was up on a streaming website for free to watch. Otherwise I'd feel ripped off. As this is dollar store DVD quality at best. This just shows it takes a lot more to make a martial arts movie than most think.

Unlike the first one this one they actually keep a better pace, the bad guys kind of suck. The main bad guys don't look intimidating, one blonde guy looks like he owns a car wash or bowling alley and the other looks like he'll sell you shoes. The henchman that stands out the most looks like what Steven Tyler or Mickie Rourke would later become especially those who have seen The Expendables where he's in one of them. The dubbing is that typical kind like anyone who has seen "Fighting Ace" or possibly even some of the dubbed Bruce Lee movies among others of that era.

The over the top martial arts, which the choreography was hit or miss (bad pun) for the most part got kind of boring. All the flips and super high, borderline Tekken 2 on Playstation 1 jumps kept me from turning this dull movie off. The blood looks so bad and one thing that really bothers me is at the end of the movie they are in this "cage" with all these bamboo looking spikes and they are doing all these back flips and other acrobatics.

The movie score was non-existent and although there was purpose for the hero to do what he did. You've seen it done better in 100 other movies.

A classic modern style kung fu boxing movie
vinjchi8 March 2021
Has everything you want in a martial arts movie. Storyline, training sequencing, a psychotic villain, and fast pace action with a great ending that is not anti-climatic.
