Overboard

9/10

Tell me something about my life, Dean, something not horrible.

Overboard is the kind of a fun movie to watch anytime. I saw it the movie theater 14 years ago. Today, I still watch it on television or on the video tape. It is truly a comedic classic not to be disregarded at all. It is truly funny, entertaining, and enlightening. If haven't seen it, you must for a good time. Great cast of actors and characters, I miss Roddy McDowall. I wished that Roddy got knighthood while he was alive. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have been together what must be like an eternity in Hollywood or at least a few years. Edward Herrmann has a great supporting role as Joanna's husband and Katherine Helmond from "Who's the Boss?" plays Joanna's snobbish New Yorker mother. The story begins with rich Joanna wanting a closet for her shoes so she hires a local carpenter, Kurt Russell, who does not meet her criteria. She insults and mistreats him like an animal and refuses to pay him. When she falls overboard accidentally, she loses her memory. When Kurt's character finds out, he decides to bring her home and make her pay him back. The predictable event happens so watch and see and don't watch the butchered television version either.

Fabulous!

This is an A++++++++ movie! I loved this one. I was very unhappy when I read that 'Overboard' received bad reviews by the definitely brain dead 'critics'. I was working in a video rental store when this came out on video. It was a MAJOR rental that was extremely popular with our patrons. This was an excellent family oriented vehicle. Kurt, Goldie and Roddy were absolutely fantastic! The film critics of today are in very bad form. I think they are being 'paid off' by jealous competitors! Overboard is a 'feel good' film that can excite the viewer! Wonderful! I would have liked a sequel of sorts to this one! Kudos to the actors, writers, directors and producers of this fabulous film! So sorry that you got panned by the petty media! What counts is the VIEWER! If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it! In addition to classic film lover's, Frank Capra would have loved this one!

Just a great romantic comedy with 2 great stars

This was just a great, fun film. It was extremely enjoyable to watch! The casting was great - couldn't have been better! The film is really hilarious! The kids were also really excellent. They were actually genuinely funny and made me laugh! Kurt Russell was excellent. He did a great job as the carpenter. You could see his growth - from vengeance to actual true love. Very enjoyable story. I really liked it. And I'm a - GUY! Goldie was great as well as the nasty rich girl, but when she got amnesia, she really showed heart and warmth. And Edward Hermann was a blast to watch also... All around just a great, fun, romantic comedy! Rent this film now - and watch it, if you want to smile! :)

" Nothing in your nail-polishing, rich, bitch life style will ever satisfy you "

Kurt Russell has accumulate a vast array of movie roles which originate from the Disney back lots, to the futuristic outer planets. Occasionally, he is able to surprise fans by creating a surprising left-field hit. This movie directed by Garry Marshall, called " Over-Board " is one of his best. The nexus of this story is about a struggling carpenter named Dean Proffitt, who with his four boys live off the coast of Maine in a dilapidated estate. Requested by Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) to refurbish her state room and living quarters with some innovations, she refuses to pay for them when they are not to her satisfaction. Thrown off the yacht, Dean is forced to leave without payment. However later, when Joanna falls overboard and awakens in a hospital with amnesia, both her uncaring husband Grant (Edward Herrmann) and Dean take full advantage of her misfortune. Roddy McDowall plays Andrew, Mrs. Stayton's butler and is superb in this character. The movie is a hilarious situation-comedy as Dean allows Stayton to experience the roles of wife, mother and eventually lover. For Russell fans the film is yet one more example of the versatility of the veteran actor who continues to surprise audiences with his theatrical prowess. Easilly recommended for all audiences. ****

Overboard (87)

Another great film from the Dangerfield of decades (80s) ("I get no respect!"). Joanna Stayton (Hawn), JoJo to her upper crusty kin, is rich, spoiled and so mean, when she hits the water (falls off her yacht) the sharks swim for their lives (gulp). After being fished outta the sea (Elizondo) and suffering from amnesia, she is claimed deceitfully by handyman Dean Proffitt (Russell) whom she'd wronged on a service call, he a widower with four unruly boys. After the initial culture shock, JoJo settles in with her new family and name, (Annie), sets boundries, earns their respect, gets inklings of her cultured past (suddenly speaks French, told she learned it in "the Navy") and turns as swell as George Bailey, her troubled soul not un-born (Odbody), but instead re-born in "gift." Her angel, ship's butler, Andrew, played nicely by Roddy McDowall.

Overboard sets sail from laughs, then anchors in sentiment (Twin: "You're doin' a great job, Mom"). You will do yourself and art an injustice if you rank comedy below other genres, for director Marshall did what Chaplin, Arbuckle, Normand, Wilder, Bernie Mac and Garry's l'il sister, Penny all did in coupling lotsa laughs with Big heart. It is a timeless team-up that scores at will in this MGM rom-com gem (3.5/4).

Great and hilarious

This is one of those 80s gems that bring everything to the table and is a delight to watch.

Acting: Amazing cast with real husband and wife. Kurt and Goldie obviously are great. Even extras and other characters have great development with their own humor thrown in as well. You really get attached to the characters and get made to feel all types of emotions for these well developed characters.

Story: This had a wonderful story, definitely not one I've seen before. It's done in a way where I believe any type of person could enjoy this film. It's interesting, funny, and bizarre all the way through. You just dont really believe what your seeing and enjoy the ride. Beautifully written and directed.

Summary: This is as good as it gets for family friendly comedies. If you enjoy 80s films or just something with a twist, you'll love this.

Well worth watching more than once.

An epic? No

Academy award winning performances? No

Must see? Yes! That is if you want to watch a truly funny and sweet romantic comedy.

Kurt Russell's portrayal of a father with kids desperately needing a mom and a wife; and Goldie Hawn's portrayal of a vapid socialite leading a shallow, meaningless existence sets the stage for a very funny movie that both men and women will appreciate.

While this is a comedy with many funny scenes, the movie paces itself nicely by interspersing the funny scenes with some serious and even somewhat poignant scenes.

Bottom line, you will enjoy this film.

So on the basis of being enjoyable and fun to watch I give "Overboard" a 9.

I Just Loved It!

This is one of those movies I can watch time and again and never get tired of it! It was funny, entertaining, the kids were a real riot, but most of all Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were terrific, and the real-life chemistry between them came shining through!

I love the way Goldie's character changes from self-centered, entitled socialite to warm-hearted, compassionate and down-to-earth, all brought about by an accident, amnesia, and a clever revenge scheme that ranks in the top ten!

You can say that hidden inside Joanna was Annie, just waiting for something (or someone) to help bring her out. Goldie did a superb job of playing both sides of her personality, and happily, the better one wins!

Kurt's character goes through changes as well, from a guy bent on revenge (and understandably so) to one who appreciates the changes Annie's made to his life (as well as his four sons), and slowly lets her into his heart.

Worth watching (more than once)!

Iconic

What an iconic movie. Used to watch this as a kid and now as an adult the film is legendary. Goldie Hawn is my all time favourite actress. The acting and storyline is brilliant. Some cheesy bits but it works.

Hilarious, lovely and easy to watch

I've rated this film 9/10 because I just love it, a brilliant classic that will be forever funny. One of those films that I can just watch again and again or whenever I'm bored. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are both hilarious and their chemistry is so real, it's no wonder they are together in real life. Not to forget the stellar cast including the brilliant late Edward Herrmann and Roddy McDowall, Katherine Helmond and Bad Billy Pratt Mike Hagerty. Watch this film and then watch it again and again

the beginning alone makes it worth the rest

Like I said, Goldie Hawn as a rich bitch in the beginning is laugh out loud funny. Too bad it couldn't continue like that throughout the whole movie, but pretty good nonetheless. Whoever plays Hawn's mother (sorry for not knowing) is also great in her role (Maggie Smith would have been better, considering her Gosford Park role). 7/10.
