These are Dutch soldiers so they would have been paid in Guilders or Military scrip, not dollars. Military Scrip was money printed by the military in bright colors with cash values printed on them in order to prevent black marketing. The military would randomly change the color of the scrip and set one day to exchange the old for new.
When they have the women in the tent for sex the Sergeant keeps saying $10 for a short time, meaning sex one time. The going rate for a prostitute was $10 in 1986 when friends of this contributor were there and this movie was made. In 1951 it was more like 25 cents, according to family members that were there then.
