Roberto Benigni, Tom Waits, and John Lurie in Down by Law (1986)

Goofs

Down by Law

Edit

Continuity

Zack writes the number of the days he's spent in the cellar on the wall. Before he fights Jack for the first time, he angrily scribes two big lines (two days). In the next scene with Roberto, they are normal length.
When Zack comes back for Roberto, he had already been in the water and should be dripping wet. However, he and his clothes are completely dry.
When Zack is driving and talking to various folks, the driver's side window is open and he has his elbow protruding outside of it. However, in the next cut, the window is now closed and his elbow is leaning against the window glass.

Factual errors

The first name of actor Eliott Keener is misspelled "Elliot."
If Bob's story of his being attacked with billiard balls and accidentally killing one of the attackers with one is true, he would have, more than likely, been found not-guilty of manslaughter due to self-defense.

Revealing mistakes

When Roberto is drawing a window on the wall, an indistinct impression of the same drawing of a window can already be seen, presumably drawn during an earlier take and later erased.

Miscellaneous

In the jail cell, the tally marks made by Zack are inconsistent. Some are five lines and a strike-through line and others are four with a strike-through line. There's even one set without a strike-through line. Additionally, some are vertical and others are horizontal. Usually, the tally marks would be more uniform.

Crew or equipment visible

(Around 1:09:10) When Zack is talking about snakes in the forest, a crew member's shadow intrudes on the left side of the screen, then disappears.

Character error

When the escaped prisoners are navigating through the swamp and Roberto is in front using two tree branches to help guide the boat; in the middle of his dialog, the branch in his left-hand snaps and falls into the water. However, he didn't acknowledge this event and both his arms continue to stroke as if nothing happened.
