Desert Hearts (1985)

Goofs

Desert Hearts

Edit

Continuity

Toward the end of the movie, when Vivian and her divorce lawyer are walking down the steps of the courthouse, you can see an older woman with a straw hat walk up the stairs by them. When Vivian & the lawyer reach the door to walk outside, you can see the same woman walking in.

Factual errors

In the hotel room when Vivian recounts to Cay the confrontation earlier between herself and Francis, she says she (Vivian) was standing in the rain when in reality the confrontation took place when the weather was sunny and dry.

Revealing mistakes

At one point Cay is driving down a street while Patsy Cline is playing on the soundtrack. Apparently in order to save money from having to rent 1950's style cars, there are no other cars on the street, either in traffic or parked on the side of the street. However, she does drive by four 1980's style cars that somehow failed to get moved out of the way.

Anachronisms

Though the movie is set in 1959 the markings on the center line of the highway are yellow. Such lines were white until 1971 when the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices mandated a switch to yellow.
While the film is set in 1959, the opening scene is of the "Super Chief" rail service pulling into Reno, NV, while in fact it was a service of the Santa Fe railroad at the time, one which did not get anywhere near Reno. Compounding the error the scene mistakenly indicates that the line was operated by the Union Pacific Railroad while the diesel locomotive seen pulling the train into the station at Reno is labeled with the (U.S.) Department of Transportation logo, a federal entity established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966, and which began operation on April 1, 1967.
The bassist in Silver's band is playing a Fender Jazz bass, with three volume/tone control knobs and block inlays on the fretboard. The first production year for the Fender Jazz was 1960; the three-knob volume and tone controls were not introduced until 1961, and block inlays were not introduced until 1966.

Character error

Cay has an accent that comes and goes.
