Fun 80's TV movie
stanfunky3 June 2020
This was a great movie as a kid, more relatable than most. If you invented something and got paid a bunch of money for it, who wouldn't do the things Max did? And to 'freub' the earlier reviewer, the name of the movie you are looking for is The B.R.A.T. Patrol. It aired the week before this one in 1986 on the Magical World of Disney. Chris Carter (of X-Files fame) was the writer and Sean Astin (LOTR, Rudy) was the star. Hope that helps!

it was such a long time ago. i love 80's movies. if anyone knows of any more 80's TV movies that are good let me know. I read that some people hated the movie. man, that's crazy. when i was a kid i loved it. my brother and i taped and watched it over and over. i lost the tape, but i'd like to get a copy somehow, because it reminds me of being a kid. i wish they made more TV movies like that today. it's no blockbuster, but just good fun TV. another good movie is monster squad. if anyone remembers that one. or little spies. that's an old one. i bet no-one remembers that one. there's one more about a bunch of kids with bikes, and had a club, and had something to do with the army, but i don't remember the name of it.

Cool 80s Movie (for TV)
intrepidjournalist26 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on TV in '86 (a year before I saw the Goonies on VHS), so I didn't know who Chunk was, but I remember digging this movie as a 9 year old. This kid (Jeff Cohen) builds a bike with some sort of booster on the back wheel which makes it jump 30 feet in the air, and somehow keeps the landing from killing the rider. The first one he builds is all cobbled together, but then he sells his design to a toy company. They build a really high-tech model, which he uses at the end to save somebody. I don't remember the details, but I remember thinking it was pretty good for TV. If you didn't have cable in '86, NOTHING cool came on TV.

Please!
jcbuhr22 December 2016
If anyone knows where I can buy a copy of this movie, can you please tell me how I can do so? I know this is going to sound kind of corny, but when I was a little kid my mom had recorded this movie on a VHS and used to have me and my brother watch it. I remember liking the movie a lot, but I think my mom actually really liked the movie too and it was one of her favorite kids movies that we watched that didn't suck as bad as some of the other weird movies that kids enjoy. Later though when I was a little older I remember I had wanted to record something and I grabbed this tape without checking what it was and recorded over it. I can't remember exactly what I recorded, but I remember that it was something really dumb and when my mom found out that I had recorded over it she actually seemed kind of sad and I felt like a huge a**hole. Since then I have tried to find a copy of it to give to her as kind of a gift and I have NEVER been able to find it. So please, if you know where I can even buy a bootleg VHS copy of this please let me know and I will pay decent money for it. Thank you.

Good Television
Vtlfjellman4 April 2004
Too much of the stuff on Television today is not appropriate to even show your kids this movie was one of the few you could watch with the whole family and still enjoy sure it was the ever expectant happily ever after and very predictable. Everyone wants to see the underdog succeed and that is exactly what happened. Who wouldn't want a bike like that? If they made them now everyone would be in line to purchase one. If only the writers of today could write some good quality instead of just continually copies of another persons ideas. Ask Max is a good quality movie and it really captures the best of the 80's also. I would recommend this film as long as you can still find it because it is quite hard to get a hold of. Overall 9/10.

Chunk....nooo!!!!
t_woolery20 June 2003
Holy crap, did this thing stink. Tragically, the most famous people involved were Jeff Cohen (Chunk from The Goonies) and Ray Walston (Mr. Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High). I remember watching this on ABC as part of the Disney Sunday Night movie they used to show before the real movie at nine. No plot to spoil, except for the fact that Chun...er, Max kept inventing these amazing things yet still couldn't find popularity at school. The one really memorable scene puts him flying over the goal posts of his school football field in his invented flying bicycle. Double-photography was never a good thing. In typical Disney fashion, Max gets his wish and everybody walks off into the sunset of the happy Disney world where every ending is a happy one. This isn't even a guilty pleasure-I'd use this movie to punish a kid who misbehaved.

With apologies to Jeff and Ray.
