From the height of the pigeon
sachenkov19 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
From the very first frame from the height of a pigeon flight opens - is it really paradise? The Siberian town in the original play by the Siberian Vladimir Gurkin, the Karelian village at the filming location, our Soviet past, our old, secret. A forestry farm, swept courtyards and well-groomed vegetable gardens, such native houses, immersed in the greenery of forests, flooded with some especially pure sunlight. All that they were painfully ashamed of - these clumsy aunts in sandals on socks, in leggings with heels, amateur art shows, moonshine, a village quadrille. Everything that was so shyly loved.

A simple plot - the story of how the unlucky Vasya Kuzyakin cheated on his beloved wife Nadia with an unhappy aging fool, dressed up in the clothes of an elegant lady - could not have worked by itself if not for the charm of all those who played without exception, the charm is the finest and most accurate. The film is a quadrille - action and the characters move, as if fitting into the figures of the French dance that has become so Russian: "The second figure. Sad," - with a half-sincere sigh, announces to us none other than the director himself. The film is hooliganism - these Easter eggs from the TV, from the hot musical accompaniment of the southern languid frames, these telegrams from the sky, yes, these delightful exits of the spouses of Uncle Mitya and baba Sasha, erepenisty Lenka or kind Olenka, not to mention the mini-performances of grandcocket Raisa Zakharovna, everything could "not roll", slip through at least a spark of falsehood, but no, everything is in one breath, and everything causes not even admiration, not respect, not delight - such love before the interception of breath, above the pigeon flight. Knowing by heart, before each remark you expect to torment.

... Is everything simple? That's just a tragicomedy about our wayward life, about wayward men and touching women? Isn't it about Russia, painfully embarrassed by its protruding poverty and not noticing its quiet and sublime beauty, so bitterly afraid of its path and wanting these elegies, chic accessories and pseudo-clever interesting things? Isn't our cursed and revered image the "fool" from the story of Basil, whom God deprived of intelligence (in the understanding of the wise cunningly), but endowed generously with kindness and strength? Isn't the film about the sanctity of cranks who lived and still live so widely and cleanly, without greed, about those for whom a pair of crested pigeons is more expensive than new boots? They are watching with a knife around the corner, they are buried at the destroyed churches, but doves, white doves, are circling over the light, and they are innumerable.

A wise, warm and funny film.
kairat_mynbayev7 February 2010
This is one of those movies whose plot does not tell very much. You need to see it to fully appreciate its perfection. I saw it for the first time in the 1980's. Today, more than a quarter of a century later, the movie looks as fresh and entertaining as before. Those who don't speak Russian lose a lot by not watching this piece of art.

Every character is authentic and original. Sergei Yursky, one of the famous Russian comedians, is especially funny as Dyadya Mitya. Aleksandr Mikhailov, who in most other films plays a macho, here does an outstanding job as a simpleton Vasya. Fortunately, the director balanced well the contribution of Lyudmila Gurchenko, a veteran of the Soviet cinema, with that of the others. After watching the movie you have the feeling that you have lived together with the heroes.

poetry of small things
Kirpianuscus11 June 2016
a film about every day life.bitter comedy, good acting - far to be a surprise -, a simple story about every day events, warm definition of love, family and a form of innocence and kindness who could seems be strange. sure, expression of political change. far by politic but with moral references, it has the virtue to give credible characters, seductive story, lovely scenes and the poetry of the small things who defines many gems of Soviet cinema. its charm is irresistible. and the presence of legendary Ludmila Gurchenko is only one of the best examples. but the precious gift of Love and Doves is the status of story about nothing and about everything in same measure. the universal message, wise, amusing and precise about details of existence. a film about love and doves. and about the joy to live.

birds of paradise and not-so-paradise
lee_eisenberg12 August 2016
Vladimir Menshov's "Lyubov i golubi" (alternately called "Love and Pigeons" and "Love and Doves" in English) looks at the mishaps that ensue after a family man goes to a resort and has an affair. I understand that, despite the image of the ideal Soviet family man, plenty of men in the USSR had affairs. You can bet money that the same thing was going in the US (trust me, the United States and Soviet Union had more in common than they liked to admit). Basically, Vasiliy is attracted to Raisa's kindness, she to his knowledge, and the movie brings up the issue of whether or not marriage is a form of slavery.

Of course, it's possible to simply laugh at the absurd situation that the movie depicts. I liked it. I wonder what Alfred Hitchcock would have thought of this use of birds in a movie.

Touching and warm
opengates9 August 2017
It is difficult to describe the touching and warmth that this film gives. Love, funny situations, family care for each other. Wisdom and warmth. ... And of course music! The combination of camera work, humor, music, excellent acting makes the film unforgettable. And there is no reason to remember that the budget of the film is very low.Be sure to watch this movie! He will not make you smarter, but he will make you a little happier.

life as it is
ddteam-2189819 January 2022
The Soviet film Love and Doves tells us about the life situation that many families face. The plot of the story is a reality that many people encounter in life. But how to cope with the emerging problems and twists and turns on the path of life, and why is this happening? Of course, this film does not touch upon the philosophical issues of being, but it shows us what should be the main thing.

In a person's life, who is his support and what you need to strive for. Although we all still understand what is good and what is bad, but everyone can stumble, but everyone deserves a chance to be forgiven. This film, despite the rather serious plot, is filled with humor, worldly experience and evokes only positive emotions in us. The excellent play of the actors shows the life of the outback in all its immediacy. We empathize with the main characters until the end of the film and hope for a happy ending. Whether he will or not, you will only know when you watch the film, because here it is life as it is.

My favorite!
altanapylenkova19 January 2022
The movie "Love and Doves" is one of my most favorite movies.

Everything is fine in it: the work of the film crew, a well-chosen cast and their game. The music in the film is appropriate and in some moments adds a zest.

For me, this film seemed very vital. The situation described in the film is very similar to reality. The psychotypes of the characters are revealed in detail and selected.

This film reveals the importance of human relationships in life, and also shows very important human qualities-the ability to love and be loved, and of course to forgive. I believe that love is wonderful and everyone deserves to find love!

In the film "Love and Doves", the era of that time is well conveyed and you can plunge into it with your head.

And finally, I want to say that the film awakens the best feelings in me. After all, he is kind and real.

I advise everyone to watch it.

Respect for Russian movies
mab-2506220 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Hello and respect to all, I have just started watching Russian movies. I didn't know that Soviet cinema was so powerful. This is the second movie I've watched by Vladimir Menshev after the movie "Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears". Both movies were beyond my imagination. Is the Soviet Union so underestimated?? The world should have more respect for Russian cinema and all lovers and professional followers of cinema should watch famous Russian movies. The internet was not available, but I recently returned the English subtitles to Farsi through a website. However, I must say about this movie, maybe the western viewers do not understand the pigeon game correctly. But in Iran and many countries of the Middle East, the pigeon game is very common and many people are addicted to it, something that may not exist in the West. Also, I had a lot of fun shooting the film and many times I was lost in the beauty of the environment, so I missed the dialogues. I would like to say that I love the nature of Russia and I wish to travel to the Caucasus once. In the end, I must say that Soviet cinema is underappreciated and many people only know Russian cinema with Andrei Tarkovsky, while I think Vladimir Menshov and Eldar Ryazanov are better than him.
