A most impressive debut
siddhartha-v2 October 2006
A touching story about Vijay (Anil Kapoor) and his relationship with two women. Having pledged his love for Madhu (Kiran Vairale), Vijay finds himself entwined in a close friendship with Anu (Lakshmi), a married woman separated from her husband. Vijay grapples with the definition of love, treading the fine line between trust and attraction, amid tremendous societal pressures. He's confused whether he loves Anu, an older woman, yet knows there is Madhu ready to accept him as a husband. Amid all this is his youthful streak of rebellion, ready to take on the world despite the taboos attached.

Mani Ratnam captures the mood of the '80s quite brilliantly, bringing out the angst that several men confronted. He deftly handles a sensitive issue like divorce - at a time when South India hadn't come to terms with it - blending it beautifully with educational dilemmas and working pressures. Illayaraja's magical melody brings several scenes alive while Balu Mahendra's photography sets a template for several Mani Ratnam films (like Agni Nakshatram) in years to come. The depiction of Bangalore and Markara - two places where the movie is set - adds a fine texture to the narrative.

There are also several sub-plots - the relationship between Madhu and her father, between Anu and her son, between Vijay and his parents - that are weaved in seamlessly. The climax arrives gradually and the full effect is felt in the last scene, when one is told that all stories don't necessarily end in fairy tales. All in all, a masterpiece from the early '80s and, like most of Mani Ratnam's classics, a film that's way ahead of its time. A debut most memorable.

This is one of wonderful movies i have ever watched..The scenes, emotions, expressions are wonderful !! watch it once and its there with you for ever !! Laxmi's acting is phenomenal..so naive, so natural.. The relationship shown between mother and son is undefinable !! Everything about the movie can only be felt by heart.. If u haven't watched the movie yet, please watch it..Manirathnam has done a great job!! I am usually very lazy to type or write, but this one i wanted to write because its so much worth at least to write about a great movie and the direction. I had watched this movie when i was in my 5th grade, think of the effect it has even on innocent, young minds !

Beautiful

This is Mani Ratnam's first movie in Kannada before he moved over to Tamil. Anil Kapoor, Lakshmi and Kiran form the love triangle in the movie. Anu (Lakshmi) has separated from her husband and is living with her child in Mercara. Vijay (Anil) is in love with Madhu (Kiran) in Bangalore. When he moves to Mercara to take care of his dad's business, he meets Anu and a friendship develops. Vijay, Madhu and Anu, how will this triangle be solved?

The movie is beautiful. Lakshmi and Kiran are stunning! Ilayaraja's background score and songs are ear-worms. The interplay of light and shadow all through the movie is notable. This is a must watch for any Kannada movie viewer.

The movie is really good. This can be remake in this era. This movie released in 80's but Maniratnam went far beyond the generation!! This story can happen in this generation!!! Normal conversation no Big drama .. you can see 2kind of ppl.. who are broad-minded and narrow minded ppl. Long distance relationship.. I loved the movie..
