Remake Is Better

Confesiones íntimas de una exhibicionista (1983)

** (out of 4)

Lina Romay plays a lonely woman who spies on a couple having sex in the room next to hers. Soon Romay builds up the courage to join them and soon finds herself with another couple who begin teaching her other sexual acts. Franco would remake this film three years later in El Miron y la exhibicionista and I think that film works a lot better than this one. In that movie you had a man spying on Romay and another woman as they had sex so the stories are pretty familiar but the remake was a lot better made and featured a brilliant movie score to spice up the action. That film there was also hardcore while this one here features one oral sex scene and everything else is softcore. This film here is really hampered by an extremely low budget, horrible editing and an overall ugly look. The spying scenes here are poorly filmed and they're never erotic and become quite boring very quickly. I had to view this film in Spanish without English subtitles so I'm sure I missed out on a lot of the stuff dealing with Romay and her two new sexual partners because there's a lot of dialogue in these scenes. The movie remains mildly interesting throughout its 80-minute running time and Romay offers up a decent performance but I'd recommend the remake over this one.

Love Lina/Candy
BandSAboutMovies22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While Lina Romay is listed as the director for this film, her husband Jess Franco has often said that this was done for business reasons. No matter - she's the star here, basing this film on her book Memorias de una exhibicionista and appearing as Candy (Coster?), a girl who tells us all about her adventures.

This flirts with being hardcore - Franco remade it three years later as a full pornographic film El Mirón y la Exhibicionista - but it also has some interesting moments, as the one man who treats Candy well is gay and he's both surprised that she didn't get it and also sad that he's the one man who has ever treated her with any respect.

It's also totally another take on Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac.

So here's where this goes full Franco: Cathy once lusted after her sister, watching her take baths, sneaking nearby to watch her make love after her wedding, even joining in. And while that scene is pure porn fantasty fodder, what happens after isn't. You never see adult films - well, Taboo, but I'm talking about today's obsession with incest - tackle what happens after. The obsession that Candy felt for her sister went away when they finally touched one another and now, she's lost and alone and without that feeling, she understand the void.

Then she meets her lover Kathy (Elisa Vela, Mansion of the Living Dead) and it all makes sense again, if by making sense you mean making love on stage in front of an audience. And then, she learns that even lust and sex and need can exist beyond death.

Look, sometimes you watch a movie and you see nothing but grainy ugliness where I see something else. We're all different seein different things and maybe my overexposure to Franco has burned a loving hole for Lina and Jess to live inside my frontal cortex and make it disposed to loving never-ending lounge music playing over gap toothed sex symbols, forever remaking the same stories until they become a saga.

Cult sexpot Lina Romay in a blond wig
charlottesweb2 January 2001
Candy tells the story of her life, her dissatisfaction with her male lovers, her desire for her girlfriend Katy and the route that led her into stripping. This is 80 minutes of flesh, bordering on the hardcore, sometimes on the gynaecological, and supposedly directed by Lina Romay (Candy Coster). Her husband Jess Franco was probably on hand somewhere. Romay in 1982 is not the trim young sexpot she was in the early 70s but she loves to get stuck in and there are still moments of genuine eroticism. It's a shame a ridiculous blond-white wig often offsets her cute, slightly buck-toothed face.
