Quotes

  • Carol : What do you want? This isn't your turf. You can't bust me here.

Peter McDermott : I just came to see how you are.

Carol : Why? To give me the "wages of sin" lecture?

Peter McDermott : I came to tell you I'm on your side.

Carol : What the hell are you gonna do for me? You really want to do something, why don't you pay the hospital bills? The hooker's union doesn't have a group medical plan, you know?

Peter McDermott : The hotel is taking care of the bill.

Carol : I'm not asking for any favors from you. I'll pay you back; cash or trade, whatever you want.

Peter McDermott : I'll tell you what I want. I want you to press charges against the people who did this to you.

    Carol : Press charges?

    Peter McDermott : Mm-hmm.

Carol : Call the cops? Boys at the precinct will really have a great time with that one.

Peter McDermott : Carol, I'll back you.

Carol : Who's asking you? I have my body. Whenever it's back in working order, you can take your shot at it, whatever the bill comes to.

    Peter McDermott : Carol...

Carol : Leave me alone! I am a hooker. And sometimes, I am a punching bag for punks. But one thing I'm not, I am not anybody's cause. I am not here to make you feel good. So just leave me alone. Just get out and leave me alone. I am not asking for anything from you.

  • Peter McDermott : It's a little late to be working, isn't it?

Christine Francis : Oh. Hi, Mr. McDermott. I don't mind. Uh, some of this stuff needs attention right away, like finding a new assistant.

Peter McDermott : How are you doing?

Christine Francis : I've been checking these résumés. The right person should be in here somewhere. Don't you think?

Peter McDermott : [flipping through them]  "Ph.D., Cornell School of Hotel Administration". "10 years top management, Barron Hotels." I used to go to Cornell.

    [she yawns]

Peter McDermott : You ought to get some sleep, don't you think?

Christine Francis : Oh, that's okay. I caught some Zs on your couch. I... I like to work nights.

Peter McDermott : You do have a place to sleep, don't you?

Christine Francis : Well, sure I do. Who do you think I am? Some kind of wandering derelict? Besides, you have enough of your own problems. You don't need to be worrying about me. Like this beef from the guy in 1209. The complimentary flowers gave him hay fever. He's threatening to sue. Is that gratitude?

Peter McDermott : Why did you do it?

Christine Francis : [getting that she's been found out]  'Cause I knew I couldn't compete. You need somebody special. I'm sorry. I'll clean out my desk.

Peter McDermott : Christine... I think we better talk. Now.

  • Christine Francis : My mother brought me and my three brothers up. They got out as soon as they could. We were real close. We still are, but there's not much for them in Tarrant, Oklahoma. For me, dishing out apple pie at the truck stop, fighting off the semi drivers. My mother always wanted me to have better. Before she died, I promised I'd go for it.

Peter McDermott : Why here? Why the St. Gregory?

Christine Francis : When I was, uh, 17, we took a senior class trip to Dallas. We stayed at this great old hotel, the Piedmont.

    Peter McDermott : Ah.

Christine Francis : It was love at first sight. I went back home to the library and read everything I could about hotels; uh, how-to books, biographies, management theories, memoirs... and all about this place. I figured if I was gonna shoot for the stars, I might as well shoot for the St. Gregory.

Peter McDermott : Look, it's getting late. Uh, why don't you have them get you a room here for the night?

Christine Francis : Uh... what do you want me to do about finding your new assistant?

Peter McDermott : Oh, that's right; my assistant. Well, uh, we'll talk about it tomorrow. Get yourself some sleep.

Christine Francis : Mr. McDermott, you sure do run a fine hotel.

Peter McDermott : You're not doing too badly yourself.

  • Peter McDermott : [seeing his chief of security working as a waiter]  What are you doing here? You have to moonlight for tips? We don't pay you enough working security?

Billy Griffin : I'm on a case, boss. I'm staking out a silver thief. I think I got him nailed. See that dude in the pinstripes?

Peter McDermott : [seeing who he means]  Billy, that is the chief of police.

Billy Griffin : So, who's perfect?

  • Christine Francis : Mr. McDermott, I'm glad I found you. Ella Fitzgerald is confirmed for the Carlisle Room right after Mr. Tormé's engagement.

    Peter McDermott : Mm-hmm.

Christine Francis : And I've roughed out this letter to the American Psychological Association pitching the St. Gregory for their next convention, if you'd like to take a look at it.

    Peter McDermott : Okay.

    Christine Francis : Great.

Peter McDermott : [Mark approaches as she leaves]  Who is she?

Mark Danning : I don't know. One of the new PR assistants?

Peter McDermott : I didn't know we were hiring any. Which brings up another little point. I was supposed to be interviewing for my assistant yesterday. Where are all the applicants?

Mark Danning : I thought you'd seen them. Want me to check it out?

Peter McDermott : No, I'll handle it later.

  • Christine Francis : I finally got ahold of Dr. Moscowitz. They've agreed to give us the psychologist convention if we can guarantee 150 rooms and the grand ballroom.

    Peter McDermott : Oh.

Christine Francis : I'll have to juggle a few things around, but I think we can pull it off.

[putting a tray on his desk]

Christine Francis : Here's your lunch. Turkey on rye and a bowl of chowder. I know you didn't order that, but I got this inside tip from Luis the soup chef. It's sensational.

Peter McDermott : You know, since you're so familiar with our operations, maybe you can help me figure something out.

    Christine Francis : What's that?

Peter McDermott : Well, I haven't had any luck finding my new assistant. In fact... I haven't had any applicants at all. Any idea why?

Christine Francis : [taken aback]  Uh... actually, I'm working on it. It's hard to get just the right person.

Peter McDermott : And just what is "the right person"?

Christine Francis : Well, uh, you don't want someone who comes in with all kinds of superficial stuff; uh, experience, degrees, that kind of thing. What you want is someone who can just move in and take over the job, someone with guts, who cares. Somebody who wants this job more than anything in the world, who will give it everything.

Peter McDermott : You know, that kind of a person is hard to find.

    Christine Francis : Real hard.

Peter McDermott : But you will keep working on it?

    Christine Francis : Yes, sir.

Peter McDermott : And I'd certainly like to have him or her in here by tomorrow.

  • Christine Francis : When do you want to start interviewing the new applicants?

Peter McDermott : Applicants? For what?

Christine Francis : Your new assistant.

Peter McDermott : Why? Are you in a hurry to get out of here? Has somebody offered you something better?

Christine Francis : I thought you wanted someone right away.

Peter McDermott : Well, yes. I do.

Christine Francis : Wh-What are you saying?

Peter McDermott : You. You belong here at the St. Gregory.

Christine Francis : Yes. I do.

Peter McDermott : Okay. Good. Let's see you earn your pay.

  • Billy Griffin : [Peter accosts a teenager who raped a call girl]  The man needs an attitude adjustment real bad.

Peter McDermott : Well, he's gonna have plenty of time to get one.

Billy Griffin : Are you gonna lay this on the police?

Peter McDermott : Are rape and assault against the law?

Billy Griffin : Look, I know he's a mean dude. I think it'd straighten his mind out real good if somebody ran over him a couple of times with a semi rig. But let's face it, this woman did not come in here for a brainstorming session with the Kuwaiti trade delegation.

Peter McDermott : She didn't come here to get raped.

Billy Griffin : You think she's going to the cops? Lay a hooker's word up against a rich kid's?

Peter McDermott : So we just let 'em get away with it, huh?

Billy Griffin : Oh, that don't sit good. You want justice.

Peter McDermott : Something wrong with that, Billy?

Billy Griffin : Justice is what gets you ten years' hard time when you could've copped a plea and got out in six months, justice. It's a dangerous game, boss.

  • Peter McDermott : Mrs. Langley, what a nice surprise.

Claire Langley : I know you don't like to be surprised, Peter. It's sort of a last-minute drop-in. Your reservations people thought they could find something for me.

Peter McDermott : Oh, no problem. We'll always find something for the Langleys.

Claire Langley : It's just Mrs. Langley this time. My, uh, my husband couldn't get away.

    Peter McDermott : I see.

Claire Langley : And you can relax. It's not your responsibility to enforce the seventh commandment. When I found out about the parade of women that Bob's been bringing here over the years, I decided to find out what I'd been missing. What better place to find out than St. Gregory?

Peter McDermott : Are you sure that's what you want?

Claire Langley : Maybe that's why I came here; to find out what I want.
