Dominick Hide (Peter Firth), the erstwhile time traveller of 1980s acclaimed The Flipside of Dominic Hide, has been promoted. He is now a Leader, living happily with his wife and son.
His Christmas celebrations are interrupted when he is summoned to rescue Pyrus Bonnington, a time traveller who, inspired by Hide's own story, has landed in 1982 London. Hide takes the opportunity to drop in on his former lover (Caroline Langrishe, still breathtaking).
The play toys with the viewer, offering a kidnapped princess and the government impounding of Bonnington's time machine - but this is first and foremost a continuation of the two track love story, one in 1982, the other in 2132. Hide has responsibilities now and unless he is very careful he could lose everything.
The play (out on BBC DVD c/w The Flipside of Dominick Hide), of course, lacks some of the surprise factor that Flipside had, yet it is still a terrific piece of work, full of wit and charm, but with a real sense of the heartbreak inherent in Hide's circumstance. The final scene is almost too painful to bear and yet is at the same time uplifting in its emotional intensity.
