For westerners, the story may not appear touching because in western cultures, girls and boys are treated more equally in comparison to the traditional Confucian cultures. However, for Chinese culture in which the traditional Confucian teaching was dominant, women are discriminated against, and father-daughter relationship is often as close as that of father-son relationship.
