Duran Nick Mancuso could not have ignited the crude oil with his lighter. The ignition temperature of crude is too high for what the lighter could produce.
However, in the film, the massive amounts of guano were described as "a thick syrup of ammonia". Guano, in some ancient cultures, was used as a fire-starter, as it is highly flammable. It could generate enough heat to ignite the oil pockets underground.
Bubonic plague is easily treated with the modern discovery of antibiotics. No one suggests this as a solution, even though somebody, such as Payne, would definitely know.
Payne refers to vampire bats urinating excess blood. He should have specified that the bats urinate the plasma from their prey's blood, as it has no nutritional value and acts as a suspension fluid.
