- The girl with the cormorants is seen clearly topless; the samurai girl is briefly seen topless when she prepares the gaijin samurai for what is to come (the camera cuts before anything happens that you wouldn't see in a soap opera). When the Bos'n and his nephew are in the bathhouse, nude people of both genders are seen from the back.
Violence & Gore

- Several very violent but (mostly) non-bloody sword fights (mud/blood on faces & costumes but except once no view of wounds), two decapitations without blood, one ritual suicide presented in reactions. This film depicts a time of war and violence.
Profanity

- Perry swears like ... well, a sailor. The other Americans give off with the odd four-letter word rather than the polite substitute in many cases. My Japanese isn't good enough to discern if the Japanese characters use profanity.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

- There is a diplomatic reception on the ship involving alcohol, the Bos'n frequently seeks grog or sake, he mistakes lighthouse fuel for sake in one scene (he doesn't drink it though!). I can't recall if any of the Americans were depicted as smoking; if so, nothing stronger than cigars. Drug use doesn't feature in the film.
Frightening & Intense Scenes

- Some viewers might be offended by an historically-accurate depiction of a blackface dance routine on the ship. The marine captain digs a bullet out of a Japanese officer's shoulder. The battle at the lighthouse might be too strong for some.
