Goofs

Breaking Away

Edit

Continuity

When Dave is drafting behind the Cinzano semi-truck, his bike is on the small chain-ring and he is managing to travel at 50+ miles per hour. An earlier shot shows him in the large, and correct, chain-ring behind the semi.
After falling from his bike, Dave's shirt is dirty. But when he crosses the finish line minutes later, his shirt is clean and fresh.
During the Little 500 race, before the accident involving Dave Stoller, there's a shot of Dave racing out in front of the pack with his leg bandaged and his feet taped to the pedals.
When the policemen arrive at the café, the bowling ball stuck to Cyril's hand comes loose and breaks a window, but in the next shot it's again stuck to the hand.
The scene after Dave shaves his legs, we see him at the quarry with hairy legs.

Factual errors

In the race scene with Team Cinzano, the main character Dave Stoller and a couple other racers have their leather hairnet helmets on backwards. The large piece in front belongs on the back. You can see other racers with them on correctly. The front is smaller and allows for more ventilation. The back is larger for more protection and to support the hairnet from pushing backwards in an accident.
With a height differential of almost one foot, there is no way Moochie (5'5" Jackie Earle Haley) could hop on a bike just dismounted by Cyril (6'5" Daniel Steen) and reach the pedals without adjusting the seat height.
In the Little 500 race the bikes are single-speed with a coaster brake and small gear wheel on the rear hub. In close-ups of Dave pedaling, however, the upper and lower halves of his chain are parallel, indicating the presence of a dérailleur just beyond the edge of the frame.
Dave listens to Italian opera out of admiration for the Italian cycling team, but one of the key operas heard in the film is actually German -- Friedrich von Flotow's "Martha" -- though the aria from "Martha" featured in the film, "Ach, so fromm," is heard in Italian translation as "M'appari tutt' amor."

Revealing mistakes

When Dave first collides with another bike during the race and crashes, he has blood and dirt on his leg. When he eventually comes into the "pit area" to make an exchange, there is no dirt, blood or marks visible on his leg.
The scene where Dave is chasing the Cinzano truck towards Indianapolis, he passes fields of corn at least 5-6' tall. As this occurred prior to the Little 500, which is held in early spring, it is doubtful the corn would have grown to that nearly harvest stage in early spring.

The stadium for the final bike race is obviously mostly empty, with spectators being moved around.

Miscellaneous

Submerged ice box in quarry hole is 100# minimum. Inconceivable someone or many someones would cart it over uneven rocky and wilderness terrain to drop it in the drink. Be less effort dragging it to the neighbors lawn 2 houses down in the dead of night.

Crew or equipment visible

When passing the truck, the entire crew is reflected in the truck's bumper.

Boom mic visible

Visible in the upper corner of a mirror when Dave is talking to his parents in the dining room.
