Sex & Nudity

  • A boy has an innocent crush on a girl. They kiss and hold hands, but there is nothing beyond that. There is no nudity.

Violence & Gore

  • Multiple character deaths, many of which are very jarring with flashing red colors, fanged snakes and the characters obviously frightened before their deaths. None of the deaths are particularly graphic beyond some brief blood.
  • References to child poverty, starvation and death.
  • A grotesque human skull is seen on a desk, used as a candle holder.
  • References to necromancy and satanic sacrifices.
  • The film's antagonist dies by rapid aging, after which his skull cracks in half; his body is left in a mill to burn as a fire spreads.
  • Coffins and unmarked graves are seen.

Profanity

  • There are a couple of uses of "hell", "god", "damn" and "Satan" in some translations of the film, but this is the extent of the profanity.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The antagonist drinks heavily, although less visible than in the film's book basis.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The talk of demonic rituals, black magic and necromancy may offend and bother some viewers.
  • The flashing lights and unconventional animation, much of which features puppets, stop-motion and dark colors, may frighten younger viewers.
  • The ending death scene may frighten some viewers.
  • While very tame compared to its book basis, this film still retains much of the original story including character deaths, ferocious animals and Satanism. This may frighten younger viewers.
