The Car (1977)

Goofs

The Car

Edit

Continuity

During the final chase on the motorbike, it alternates from night / day.
When Chas drops Lauren off at her home to collect things to spend the night with Wade's children while Wade's in the hospital, her home appears to be the center house in either a dead end or cul-de-sac; however, when The Car flies/drives through her home to kill her and lands on the other side of her house, it lands on a highway and drives away as if her house was built on a straight roadway.
Wade gains a pair of gloves when he is climbing the rope in the canyon.
When the Sheriff first talks to the abused wife Bertha at the police station, her bruises change from one scene to the next.
When Wade leaves his motorcycle to return to the garage, the headlight is on. When he gets on to escape The Car, the headlight is off.

Factual errors

When The Car chases the bicycle boy, there is a close up of the front bumper pushing the bike's rear wheel. You can see that the chain is on the largest sprocket, so the bike is in the lowest gear. No wonder neither bicyclist escaped.
John Morris is said to be 24 years of age, but John Rubinstein was 30 at the time of filming.

Revealing mistakes

When the car rolls over to smash the police cars, there is a one shot with one wheel missing.
During the opening murder scene of the two bicyclists, one of the helicopters used for filming can be heard hovering over the bicyclists.
Just as the Car chases the marching band into the graveyard, two kids crouch behind a tombstone, which wiggles as if made from Styrofoam (which it probably is).

Miscellaneous

When The Car rolls over the two police cars and crashes on their windshields, most of its right rear fender clearly disintegrates in a lot of pieces much like fiberglass. The whole right hand corner of its 'double-blade' rear bumper gets torn out and flies very near the camera, looking like it is built as a single molded fiber-plate. These facts contradict The Car's indestructibility's, and show that at least this one custom real car used in the stunt was not entirely sheet-metal.
(at around 43 mins) As the band members run to safety, one of them gets trampled on by a rider and horse.
The brief shot where The Car is solely shown rolling over (with the left front wheel missing) before smashing the police cars clearly was filmed in reverse. The Car is actually rolling away and coming from behind over the camera: you can see that dirt and debris are 'flying to', not 'from' The Car. Immediately after that shot The Car is shown rolling over again (with no missing wheels), but this time it is the real stunt filmed from inside the police car on the left.
In the scene where The Car has Wade in the bottom of the canyon chasing him on his motorcycle, The Car makes a turn to screen left (our right) which quickly reveals the side of the front bumper is bent out of shape. It is a goof because The Car is "indestructable".

Audio/visual unsynchronised

During the scene where the car is terrorizing the school band practice, a group of cowboys try to distract it. One of them gets knocked off his horse and when we see him fall you will notice that the frame is actually upside-down.
When Wade is in the hospital after having been floored by the Car's door, all of his doctor's lines have clearly been dubbed.
At about 15:00.- when John Morris ( the French Horn player) is first shown playing a tune, the notes play, but his fingers do not move on the keys of the horn.

Crew or equipment visible

Crew can be seen moving around in the reflection of "The Car" bumper in a close up towards the end the the cemetery scene
Shortly before The Car rolls over to crash the two police cars, there is a shot from the backseat of one police car, behind the driver. You can see the left shoulder and the helmet of the real stunt driver moving and ducking under the dash immediately before The Car smashing his windshield. A police hat is attached on top of the stunt driver's helmet, making him look like a simple ball-headed dummy at first sight.
When the band are practicing you can see the reflection of the camera and camera operator on the trombone the boy is playing during a close up (around the 42 minute mark)
When The Car drives the bicycle boy off the bridge it is obvious that the boy is leaping from the railing of the bridge. At the begin of the shot he is standing straight upright on top of the railing.
A "dummy" is ejected (on fire) from the police car after it is pushed over the cliff

Errors in geography

On the main drag of the town (supposedly in Utah), there is a sign for Interstate 5, which runs only through California, Oregon, and Washington.
The dispatcher says the car has been spotted heading "north on Interstate 12". Even-numbered Interstate highways run east-west, and Interstate 12 is entirely within the state of Louisiana, running along the north side of Lake Ponchartrain.

Plot holes

The Indian woman tells Chas that The Car had no driver when it ran Everett down. There is no way she would have been able to know this as its windows were too darkly tinted to see inside it.
The Car decides to simply hit Wade with its door instead of finishing him off as it does with everyone else.

Character error

At the start of the film Wade delivers an intelligible line while brushing his teeth vigorously. This is of course impossible and the line was obviously dubbed with much milder mangling.
The Car is covered in dust through much of the movie but when it appears in Wade's garage it is clean, as if it's been washed.
