- The film was released 3 different times on DVD. Each disc features a different aspect ratio. The first DVD edition from Critical Mass (25th anniversary) used the full frame format (the film was shot this way). The second DVD release from Critical Mass (listed as being just a special edition) uses a 1:75:1 aspect ratio. It was also noted that director Bob Clark approved of this ratio. The latest DVD special edition from Critical Mass (December, 2006) uses a 1:85:1 ratio. This 1:85:1 ratio also appeared on the special edition laserdisc that was released by Warner Bros. a few years back.
- The UK cinema version was cut by the BBFC to remove all instances of the word 'cunt' from the obscene phone calls, together with some of the other crude sexual references during the same scene. The 2003 Tartan DVD release restores all previous cuts.
- Original US theatrical release opened with the 1970s black and red Warner Bros. logo and had the title changed to "Silent Night, Evil Night" (this was also what it was named on the original posters). But all home video and subsequent theatrical releases in the US remove the logo and revert back to the original Black Christmas title.
- The 5.1 remix on the Blu-Ray releases has a bunch of added sound effects and replaces others. Only a few of the Blu-Ray releases include the original mono as a second option, including the Shout! Factory release from 2017.
