A good film about the sacrifices and stories of the Soviet Air Force in WWII. This saga of the struggle on the Eastern Front is truly one that will impress for decades to come. I regret that I had to finish the movie in a hurry, but I had a great time. I don't know if it was because of my affections towards the Soviet people during WWII, but I definitely won't forget them like the Western media. A great struggle like this deserves a great movie as a monument.

Decent ww2 film with good acting and captures the period. However I have watched Soviet war movies with much better action scenes with more authentic aircraft not post war trainers. And using newsreel battle footage instead of filmed stuntwork is cheap and weird given they use much better staged scenes in many of their ww2 films. They have the budget for this in 1974. I watch war movies mainly for the action not talking scenes. To give the filmmaker credit he offered sentimental memories and a believable atmosphere with funny moments. I have watched much more engrossing war movies than this however.

Any history buff or fan of World War II movies must add this masterpiece to their list. I have re-watched it several times in the last two decades, and still, I find myself watching this love story filled with action, Soviet humor, and beautiful music. Not over the top, yet more than enough to evoke all kinds of emotions. One of the beautiful elements of this movie is that it depicts the melting pot of the Soviet Union, showing that it was a union of several republics with such different cultures. One thing that I absolutely adore is the song "Moldovanka" and the finale, but let's leave it for the curious. Hopefully, you can find a dub or subtitles in your language. Enjoy.

a lovely film. few lines and a profound message. a war film but far to be another movie about heroic events and mounts of dead. it is poetry and music. homage and wise example to be more than political instrument. a film about human links, not complicated, about joy and sacrifices. a film of characters because each of them is a seductive sketch. a film about Soviet Union as a large family but without the veil of propaganda. it is strange its freshness. the explanation is simple - the values who defines ordinaries lives. the war is short, the music is eternal and this is the heart of its force and charm and science to present basic truth in perfect light, in the best form. nostalgic and tender. a slice from a great cinema school.

It's a movie about the Great Patriotic War and the life of Soviet war pilots, who died for their motherland. The cast is great. We watch this movie every year and it doesn't become less interesting.

Movie is full off great music which is very popular in all countries in East of Europe, this songs are live in the hearts of million peoples across the Europe. The main hero of this film is Bogdan Titarenko(Leonid Bykov). Very talented and brave leader of "Singing group", he must look after some new cadets and fight together with them against the planes of Fascist Germany. Near to the Bogdan always are his friends, they all are from different parts of the country, but they all became real brothers. Very touching part of film is love feeling between Romeo and Masha. They both were pilots and their destinies were to live in sky together and die there, war took them to life's like a victim of eternal love. This movie is about war! Our war, that killed 30 million people. It is about love. Love which does have country borders or nationalism! It is about soviet heroes, who died letting us live. Who died fighting against Hitler! There is no Soviet propaganda, which makes it suitable for any generation and for any person. The main idea is people. Their relationships, their dreams, their believes, their sacrifice and tears. This movie let you think about war. It wont show you physical pain, it will show you inner grief. Watch it and think twice voting for people who start wars, who says that your nation is better, who let people die!

This is my favorite film about the Great Patriotic War. First, the plot is based on the stories of veterans, many episodes took place in fact at different stages of the war. In addition, most of the characters have real prototypes. The plot masterfully includes both comic and funny moments, as well as moments when tears appear on their own. Secondly, the cast is incredible, when you watch them, you believe them unconditionally. Third, the music is an important part of the film, and the song "Smuglyanka" has long been popular. In short, this is one of the best films about the war.

War films tend to come in two varieties, being filled either with battle action or drama on the home front. There are outliers, certainly, but relatively few are those war films that focus primarily on the camaraderie between people in the services, and the human spirit that keeps them going, in the midst of uncertainty, combat, and death. Not only does this Ukrainian Soviet classic count among such gems, but I don't believe I specifically need to see any other examples to know that this is surely one of the best, if not the superlative. 'Only "old men" are going into battle' is a delightfully smart wartime comedy-drama in which all flavors receive emphasis in turn, but are all centered around the care shown for each other in the squadron, and the common joys that unite them The result is a feature that's tremendously heartwarming while being both funny and tragic as the narrative shifts; that this also focuses on pilots, fighter planes, and the battle in the air is a nice additional touch, a rarity in the genre. I'm rather aghast that I came across this only by chance, because as far as I'm concerned it's a superb movie that deserves far, far more recognition.
It's very much worth reading background information about the production, for in doing so it becomes very clear how much hard work and research writer, director, and star Leonid Bykov poured into the project. Bykov accordingly blended together various odds and ends in the historical record of the Soviet fight against Germany to fashion this tale, and he did so with such passion and thoughtfulness that the outcome received high praise from veterans. The fruit of that labor is an unexpectedly dynamic, vibrant picture in which the mood wanders to and fro, but only with natural fluidity and dexterity, and utmost warmth. Historical footage from the war is mixed with filmed stunts, effects, and action sequences; beautiful music greets us in occasional interludes as the squadron keeps perspective on what they're fighting for; joyous humor is juxtaposed with deeply affecting scenes of the costs of war. I can only commend Bykov for such a smart screenplay where the characters, dialogue, scene writing, and narrative all shine with such life, and to be honest his direction is just as sharp in bringing all the moving parts together into a cohesive whole.
My one criticism is that the editing is a little rough. Through to the end there is a brusque, ungainly curtness in the progression of the narrative, and in transitions from scene to scene, such that it seems we've gone from A to B too abruptly while missing details in between. Unfortunate as this is, however, it's not so severe a problem as to significantly detract from the entirety, and by and large the title is excellent. From production design and art direction, to costume design, hair and makeup; from the music, sound, and those stunts and effects, to the planes supplied for the production, everything about 'Only "old men" are going into battle' is marvelously well done, reflecting the skill and intelligence of all on hand. That absolutely applies to the acting above all, as integral to the overall success as the writing and direction. Every actor here gives a marvelous performance that truly draws forth the heartfelt tenor of the comedy-drama, with Bykov and Aleksei Smirnov only the tip of the iceberg among others including Sergei Ivanov and Vladimir Talashko. Even those in smaller supporting parts, like Yevgeniya Simonova or Olga Mateshko, make a big impression with what time they have on-screen.
Put simply I'm solidly of the mind that this flick is deeply underappreciated. Countless are those war films that show us epic battle sequences, that take us into the fog of war, that plumb moral depths, or which latch onto the juvenile boorishness of the boys who one way or another will never become men. For every classic, there is a forgettable or regrettable misstep. Much more uncommon are those war films that speak to not just the bonds between those who serve, but the bonds of humanity that keep soldiers, sailors, and pilots grounded amidst violence and spiritual destitution. Fifty years on this movie resonates on a level that exceeds questions of allegiances and borders, and it is just as engaging, compelling, and indeed rewarding as it was upon release. I'm so very pleased with how good it is, and I can only give 'Only "old men" are going into battle' my very hearty and enthusiastic recommendation!

A cultural curiosity

This movie is only interesting as a Russian/Soviet cultural curiosity. It is a 1974 movie of a Soviets pilots fighting the Germans in the Ukraine. It's 95% talk, 5% action, mostly stock footage a that. If hoping to see a war action movie, even a hint of one, this is not the movie. Talk, talk and more talk, and some singing as well. It's pretty boring. Watch this movie if interested in Russian/Soviet culture and language, or how WWII is seen in the eyes of Soviet 70s Russia.

for the music. for the nuances of story. for the human map of Soviet Union. for the status of image of essence of friendship, love, sacrifice and courage. for the humor. and for the force to give, after forty decades, a fresh story, an admirable cast. each of that details does it more than entertainment's support. it is almost a testimony about great themes of life in a delicate-precise manner. a film about courage and about choices. few memorable scenes. and splendid music. a film about war. exploring its nuances in inspired manner. because, like many films from Soviet Union, the war is the lead actor. so, the sides of it are subjects who defines the existences, choices, sacrifices, emotions and reflections of the other characters. a film who must see. for the music, for the acting, for the script, for the fragments from old documentaries. but, more important, maybe, for the atmosphere.

This is very interesting WWII fighter pilots' film in international standard!
This fighter wing has own music band played by fighter pilots themselves and the "nose art" of the plane of wing leader is "music score".
Director and main actor, Leonid Bukov is one of very impressive actor in Soviet union 1960-70s era movies who usually took rolls of ordinary citizen or soldier in several films. He never took a roll of famous red army general.
Most of air battle scenes were taken from documentary films. This films focus on a life and death, happy time and sad time, of pilots themselves, and their love with lovely female pilots.
Also I feel special Ukrainian feeling in this film.(This film was made by Ukrainian movie studio during Soviet era)
Beside this one, another Soviet Union Fighter pilot film "Baltiskoe Nyebo" (means, Baltic Sky) is also impressive in different way which focus on the various relations between fighter pilots and citizens of Leningrad under German army's Blockade.
