Synopsis

  • The lives of Atmaram (Nazir Hussain) and his wife (Dulari) are turned upside down when they see their daughter, Mala's (Aruna Irani) pictures in a magazine. They arrange for Mala's marriage with the son of Ramlal (Agha), Ravi (Amitabh Bachchan). Mala is opposed to marrying anyone who she has not met and is at the same time thrilled that the two persons she trusted, one Sharma (Shatrughan Sinha), and the other Verma (Manmohan) had actually submitted her pictures to a magazine and were now willing to sign her up for a Bollywood movie.

Actually, Verma and Sharma are con-men tracking Mala as she is from a rich family, and they have their eyes on her money and want to dupe her. They pretend to be talent scouts and take Mala's pics and pay a magazine to publish them, earning Mala's trust. Ravi tries to stop Mala posing for pics for Verma and Sharma (as he had overheard them and understood their game), but Mala was adamant. Mala thinks Ravi is a stalker and doesn't know that her parents have chosen him as her life partner. Verma and Sharma start milking Mala for small amounts in the garb of shopping for shooting supplies and Mala pays as she has been sold the dream of becoming an actress. Slowly Verma convinces Mala that his money is stuck in east Africa (as he is an ivory trader there), and since Mala is asking for a movie with a big-name star, she can perhaps bankroll part of it (for Rs 1-2 Lakhs).

Mala is not able to understand her parents' opposition on her way to fame and runs away from home with a lot of money and hands this money to Sharma and Verma (as part of the deal she made with Verma). Greed overtakes Sharma and Verma (Verma wants an equal share in the loot from Mala), leading to the death of Verma. Mala, who witnessed Sharma kill Verma, now is on the run for her life. She boards a bus from Bombay which is bound for Goa.

The bus journey is adventurous with the passengers, a totally mixed bunch, from all over India, different religions, cultures, and faiths, all thrown together for this journey. The bus is in the "control" of driver Rajesh (Anwar Ali), and conductor, Khanna (Mehmood). Mala gains everyone's attention when she takes out a 1000 rs note to pay for the bus fare. her handbag is full of notes and jewelry. Passengers include Pandit (Sunder), Bengali Passenger (Keshto Mukherjee), Boxer John Ragada (Yusuf Khan), Boxer's Henchman (Babbanlal Yadav), Young Girl's Mother (Manorama), Marathi Passenger (Birbal), South Indian Passenger (Mukri). They also pick Kishore Kumar on the way. he was going to Goa for a shoot, but his car broke down. After a song, they drop Kishore at his shoot location on the highway.

Sharma soon overtakes her and has one of his armed men on the bus to kill her. Kashibai (Lalita Pawar) joins the bus at the same stop. Kashibai brings a chicken on board hidden among her belongings. When Khanna finds out, he throws the chicken out as per the rules of the bus. But Kashibai threatens to curse everyone (she is a devotee of Maa Kaali). She forces Khanna to bring the chicken back. Khanna corners the chicken, but grabs hold of a cobra who was just nearby and brings it back. The cobra creates havoc inside the bus. a tribal eventually catches the cobra and throws it out of the bus.

And then arrives Mala's admirer Ravikumar (Amitabh Bachchan), who not only protects Mala, but also accompanies her throughout the journey. Ravi sits right opposite Mala in the bus. She has recognized Ravi as well as the guy who works for Sharma, who has boarded the bus to shoot at her. Army man (Darshan Lal) boards the bus at the next stop.

Ravi recognizes the shooter as well and sings a song to distract him and later disarm him when he rises to attack Mala. Mala notices this and thanks Ravi. the armed assassin gets off the bus taking advantage of a scuffle that starts due to the army man talking about violence. A constable gets on board, with a murderer prisoner. he takes his snuff pouch out, but accidentally drops it, spreading snuff all over the bus. Boxer John tries to sleep on 3 seats, inconveniencing other passengers. The passengers want Khanna to take care of it. When Khanna objects, John stops the bus and wants a boxing match with Khanna. Rajesh loads Khanna's gloves with stones and John goes down with a single punch.

Mala starts to trust and subsequently fall in love with Ravikumar. Meanwhile the assassin had sabotaged the fuel supply of the bus while getting off and it runs out of fuel a few miles ahead. Sharma follows with his goons. Ravi reveals to Mala that he is her fiance. Meanwhile Khanna goes with an empty canister to get fuel but gets into a scuffle with a goat herder on the way and is accosted by the villagers. When Khanna gets late, the passengers start pushing the bus. When everybody gets down, one passenger steals Mala's handbag with all the cash and the jewelry. The passengers find Khanna on the way, strung on a tree. Soon, the bus is back underway. On the bus, Mala realizes her handbag is missing. Khanna decides to take a u turn since one passenger was missing from the bus. He originally had a ticket till Belgaum but had extended it to Goa and had his eye on the handbag. As the bus goes back, Khanna changes the bus placard from "Bombay to Goa" to "Goa to Bombay". The thief sees the bus and thinks he has a ride back home. He boards the bus, only to realize that he has been caught.

The bus reverses direction again and stops at a cafe with Dhaba Owner (Asit Sen). This gives time for Sharma to catch up with the bus and who boards it at the next stop. Sharma takes control of the bus at the tip of his gun and forces it to stop at a specific location, where he gets down with Mala. His goons are waiting in a car and as they drive off, Ravi gets on the back of the car.

Kashibai encourages the bus passengers to help Mala and Rajesh turns the bus around. Ravi punctures the tires with a knife and forces the car to stop. The bus arrives and a scuffle ensues. Ravi beats the goons, including Sharma, till the police arrives. The bus finally reaches Goa and Ravi and Mala get engaged.
