Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies (1969)

Goofs

Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies

Edit

Continuity

When the two cars disrupt the hockey match on the frozen Swedish lake, Barrington is hit by a snowball hurled through the passenger window. Yet immediately beforehand, Barrington's window is wound up (Dawlish leans across and taps on it), and immediately afterward the window is still closed (the car ploughs through a snow bank, and we see blobs of snow stuck to the window).

Factual errors

When Susan Hampshire crashes Tony Curtis' car above a waterfall Tony climbs out onto the running board, slips off and is able to grab hold of the front axle, which would be an impossibility.
While hanging upside down Tony Curtis' cap stays on his head.
The Danish-German border scene is almost exceptionlessly inaccurate. On the map, the border is shown to be somewhere near Lübeck. The film is set in the 1920s; if intended to replicate the northern border of Imperial Germany, the border was in Christiansfeld and this part (South Schleswig) was furthermore ceded to Denmark on June 14, 1920. The German border post includes the old black-white-and-red German flags despite the black-red-and-gold flag being long accepted at this time, especially on a national border. The customs officers have hats with emblems of the Weimar Republic.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

(at around 9 mins) When they pull in front of "Armitage Motors" the chimneys and cooling towers of a coal-fired power plant can be seen in the background. While this type of cooling tower is incorrectly thought to be used only on nuclear plants, they were actually first used in the UK on a coal-fired plant in 1924.

Revealing mistakes

During the start of the race at John O'Groats, some of the "snow" is blown off by the wind in clumps, revealing it to be soap suds strewn about the scene.

Miscellaneous

When Sir Cuthbert Ware Armitage is playing golf and looks for his golf ball, a golf club can be seen in his right hand. In the very next scene, it is in his left hand.

Anachronisms

At the Paris checkpoint modern cars and trucks can be see across the river.
Marie's hair style is contemporary to the time the film was made, not the time in which it was set.

Errors in geography

The scenes showing Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Gert Fröbe romping about on a frozen Swedish lake show mountains, reindeer and cable cars. Would had been OK if they hadn't been on their way to Malmö in the south of Sweden, where there are no mountains and no reindeer. Thus, the sign "Eslöv 5 km" (or whatever) got an extra laugh in Sweden.

Plot holes

It is never explained how Betty continued the race after Chester only offered her a lift to the next town.
