Mayerling

Factual errors

The Prince of Wales says that Queen Victoria is aged "85 " when she only lived till she was 81 when she died in 1901. She was aged 69 at the times of the events in this movie.
The Prince of Wales says that Wilhelm (referring to Kaiser Wilhelm II) was his "cousin" when in fact he was his nephew. The Prince of Wales was the son of Queen Victoria; Kaiser Wilhelm was her grandson.
When the Empress Elizabeth asks Maria Vetsera her age, she answers "20". She was in fact only 17 when she died a short time later.
The Prince of Wales is consistently referred to as Prince Edward. In fact he would have been referred to as Prince Albert and in the company of peers simply as Bertie. He was Christened Albert Edward after his father and his maternal grandfather. He ruled and reigned under the name of King Edward VII.

Revealing mistakes

When the Archduke decides to commit suicide beside his beloved Mary who was dead on the bed, and falls to the floor, Mary (who he had shot some time earlier) reaches out to catch his falling hand.

Anachronisms

Archduke Rudolf addresses the Prince of Wales as "Edward". Though he chose upon his accession in 1901 to reign as Edward VII, he was christened Albert Edward, was known prior to accession as Prince Albert (after whom, by the way, the brand of pipe tobacco was named), and was called by his family and close friends "Bertie".
