- This movie is based on a book by Marie McSwigan. It is 1940 in Norway, a neutral, peace-loving country that is invaded by Nazi Germany. A gang of Norwegian children do what Norwegian children like best - ski. They are actually rescuing Norwegian gold from the Nazi invaders. The Nazis search all adults but don't suspect children playing. The children carry the gold, one bar at a time, across the mountains to a fishing boat. It is a race against time, it is spring and the snow is melting. So they ski from dawn to dusk every day.—David Dermott <nstn1181@fox.nstn.ca>
- It's the winter of 1940, and the Nazis have just invaded Norway where they plan to build an anti-aircraft base. In the coastal fishing village of Riswyk, many of the men have formed a resistance group to fight the Nazis. Thirteen year old Peter Lundstrom wants to join his father, Lars Lundstrom, and his Uncle Victor Lundstrom in the fight, Peter initially unaware of Victor's special mission. It isn't until Peter discovers a cave full of gold bars that Victor confesses his mission: to transport those stolen gold bars overseas in order to purchase munitions. Victor's problem is getting the gold bars from the cave to his fishing boat. With Peter's mother Inger Lundstrom's permission with they pulling out at any sign of trouble, Peter and his friends, out for their usual winter activity of cross-country skiing, will transport the gold, one bar per person at a time, the Nazis who would never suspect children to search their knapsacks. They only have one month until the spring thaw to move the gold, when they would no longer be able to ski and when the melted snow would reveal the otherwise hidden cave. The acting head of the Nazi officers, 2nd Lt. Kalasch, so chosen as the ranking officer who speaks Norwegian, may cause the biggest problem in being the most present in the Lundstroms' lives in paying special attention to Victor's defiant girlfriend, college student Bente Nielsen, with Kalasch having ulterior motives in that attention beyond a man interested romantically in a woman.—Huggo
