Quotes

  • Bob Fleming : Well!

    [wolf whistles]

Liz Grune : Do you often break out into bird calls?

Bob Fleming : Hmm! That's my mating call. When I see a beautiful bird, I just can't help reacting instinctively. Do you mind if I...?

Liz Grune : I *do* mind. I like to be alone.

Bob Fleming : You're making a mistake. You'd have had a much more interesting trip with me there. Anyway, the offer's still open.

  • Bob Fleming : Step on the gas, gorgeous.

    Woman with dogs : Police.

Bob Fleming : Why, it doesn't concern us. They're after that drunken driver. Let's go!

Woman with dogs : You mean you still want to go to the airport?

    Bob Fleming : Sure. Heh-heh.

  • Bob Fleming : [after landing his helicopter at a gas station]  Fill 'er up with Super, pal. Well, is this or isn't this a gas station?

Gas station attendant : Yes, but uh...

Bob Fleming : Well then, fill 'er up, will you? Come on, hurry up, I have an appointment. Good boy.

  • Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : A lot of the time, here in Beirut, the weather's bad.

Bob Fleming : I sell umbrellas.

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : See there's of the man you are looking for.

Bob Fleming : OK, Mr. Lepetit.

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : How you come to know my name?

Bob Fleming : Ha-ha. My fingers do the playing. They have the habit of getting into people's pockets without being noticed.

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : Mm! So you're the famous X-1-1-7?

Bob Fleming : Call me Bart. Numbers bore me.

[notices Lepetit staring into rear view mirror]

Bob Fleming : Are they following us?

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : Eh... Yes.

Bob Fleming : Uh, how are things in Beirut?

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : Mm... I should say... getting warm.

[a car suddenly blocks their path]

  • Fleming's Boss : Take this.

Bob Fleming : Huh. Does it write underwater?

Fleming's Boss : This is the latest electronic gadget. We had it designed for the detection of certain microwave frequencies. And this is the world's smallest generator of laser beams. You can use it to open the door of a safe, without wasting time. Watch this.

[the beam melts a mounted pocket watch]

    Bob Fleming : Whew!

Fleming's Boss : Put that in your pocket, too.

  • Fleming's Boss : In each one of these aspirin is a microtransmitter, which only starts functioning when it comes into contact with the acids in the stomach. Look them over. And this is the receiver.

    [shows Bob a Norexa wristwatch]

Fleming's Boss : It picks up the microwaves, up to ten miles. Look: the small dials are range and direction finders. The one on the right shows the distance from the transmitter, and the one on the left gives you the bearing. The aspirin are otherwise normal. They can even be taken for a headache if anyone happens to have one.

Bob Fleming : That's good. Because I think the Russians are gonna have a lot of headaches.

Fleming's Boss : That depends on you.

  • Bob Fleming : [Lepetit stops at a red light despite being chased by a car]  What're you doing? The car's still behind us.

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : The law is still the law, and there's a traffic light.

[casually sings to himself, squirts gasoline on the car behind them]

Bob Fleming : What are you doing?

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : Just giving him a little wash job.

[lights a cigarette, ejects the lighted cigarette, peels out, rear car explodes]

Bob Fleming : Well! That wasn't bad!

Lepetit, Beyrut Taxi Driver : Oh, it's nothing.

  • Fleming's Boss : What I want to know is who's Grune? He might be the key to everything. And don't you dare come back if you let the Russians get their dirty hands on that microfilm.

Bob Fleming : Otherwise, I have a free hand?

Fleming's Boss : Yes, with unlimited expenses, and permission to kill.

  • Bob Fleming : If it's quiet and clean, it's OK.

Hotel clerk : Mm. That's strange. The last guest in room seventy-four was also named James Clark. Truly a coincidence.

Bob Fleming : America's full of James Clarks.

  • Bob Fleming : [grabs a cigar out of Ivan's pocket]  Thanks! The world keeps getting smaller and smaller. We seem to meeting a lot lately. We visit the same cities, the same hotels, the same night clubs. And now we're taking the same plane to Paris. It's mighty friendly.

Ivan : One of these days it seems likely you'll get the top blown off your head.

Bob Fleming : Perhaps it'll be your head instead of mine.

  • Ivan : Good evening, Mr. Fleming. Throw down your pistol. You may have noticed that I'm not alone.

Bob Fleming : Hmm! I noticed. You Russians never forget the masses, do you? Mass psychology, mass espionage...

    Ivan : Turn around.

  • Bob Fleming : I saw that ring last night! You were the one that slugged me! Now you're going to *talk*!

    [fight ensues]

  • Bob Fleming : [picking up a dropped bra]  Mmm! Size 36. I'm a rather good judge, you know.

  • Bob Fleming : Uh, one final question: You always so nice to people?

Liz Grune : Only to the vulgar ones.
