In New York City, Joan Howell is an aspiring/struggling actress who works for the housekeeping service, Maid to Order, to make ends meet. She shares an extremely cramped apartment with fellow struggling actress/maid Audrey, said apartment which both women are ashamed to show anyone, let alone any male suitor. Joan hasn't felt the need to invite a "boyfriend" to her place until she meets Tom Milford, a publishing executive, the two who meet by literally running into each other continually on the street. Out for drinks on a whim after one of those unexpected meetings, Joan doesn't want to show Tom her apartment, so she takes him to the apartment belonging to one of her clients, who she was told was away for ten days. What she doesn't know is that the client did not go away, that client being Tom himself, he who wants to find out not only why Joan would have a key to his apartment but what her end game is. Joan and Tom's games of lies in their courtship is only further complicated by Tom keeping some valuable oil paintings for his best friend and colleague, Harvey Granson, who is going through a messy divorce, those paintings which he is hiding from his soon-to-be ex-wife. Harvey believes that Joan perhaps is wanting to steal those paintings. As Joan and Tom start to fall for each other, the question becomes whether love will trump the lies each has perpetrated in their time together.
