Cindy Carol and James Darren in Gidget Goes to Rome (1963)

FAQ

Gidget Goes to Rome

FAQ

Seventeen-year-old Frances 'Gidget' Lawrence (Cindy Carol) gets permission from parents Russ (Don Porter) and Dorothy (Jeff Donnell) to travel to Rome with her surfer boyfriend Jeff 'Moondoggie' Matthews (James Darren) and four other friends Libby (Trudi Ames), Lucy (Noreen Corcoran), Clay (Peter Brooks), and Judge (Joby Baker). While Gidget soaks up the Italian culture, escorted by Signor Paolo Cellini (Cesare Danova) (unknown to Gidget, Paolo has been asked by her father to keep his eye on her), Jeff has his eye on their tour guide Daniela (Danielle De Metz).

Gidget Goes to Rome is based on a story and screenplay by American screenwriters Ruth Brooks Flippen, Katherine Eunson, and Dale Eunson based on characters created by Austrian-born writer Frederick Kohner in his novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas (1957). The movie was preceded by Gidget (1959) (1959) and Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) (1961) and followed by three made-for-TV Gidget movies -- Gidget Grows Up (1969) (1969), Gidget Gets Married (1972) (1972), and (Gidget's Summer Reunion (1985)) (1985), and two TV series based on Gidget -- Gidget (1965) (1965) and The New Gidget (1986) (1986).

After saying 'arrivederci' to Paolo and his wife (Lisa Gastoni), Gidget goes for a walk. She passes the Fountain of Trevi and decides to toss in a coin while making the wish that things could be the same between Moondoggie and her. Suddenly, she realizes that she just tossed away her mothers $10 gold coin, so she climbs into the fountain and goes looking for it, but a passing polizie jumps in and drags her out. Jeff, who was also walking by the foundtain after saying goodbye to Daniela, hears Gidget's cries and steps in to help, the two of them landing up at the American Embassy. Jeff tries to smooth things over by explaining that Gidget is his 'girl' and assuring them that they will be flying home tomorrow, but Gidget only has ears for Jeff calling her his 'girl' again. With everything forgiven, they and the rest of the group stop to say goodbye to Judge's Aunt Albertina (Jessie Royce Landis), to thank her for being their chaperone, and to present her with a hat. In the final scene, Gidget and Moondoggie stop one last time at the Fountain of Trevi where Moondoggie throws Daniela's locket in the water. It lands right next to Gidget's golden coin.
