Children of the Damned (1964)

FAQ

Children of the Damned

FAQ

Scientists have identified six children from around the world -- Paul Looran (Clive Powell) from London, Rashid (Mahdu Mathen) from India, Nina (Roberta Rex) from Russia, Aga Nagolo (Gerald Delsol) from Nigeria, Mi Ling (Yoke-Moon Lee) from China, and Mark (Frank Summerscale) from the USA -- all of whom possess superintelligence and extraordinary telepathic powers. Hoping to study the children, a team of researchers, including British psychologist Tom Lewellyn (Ian Hendry) and geneticist David Neville (Alan Badel) arrange to have them all brought to London. The children, however, have other plans.

Children of the Damned is a sequel to Village of the Damned (1960) (1960), which was based on the 1957 novel The Midwich Cuckoos by British science fiction writer John Wyndham [1903-1969]. Both movies were based on the same premise...that highly-intelligent children possessing a "mass mind" are born to human women, some of whom insist that they were virgins at the time of conception. The screenplay for Children of the Damned was written by American screenwriter John Briley.

No. The children in Children of the Damned are different from those in Village of the Damned. In the first movie, the children all looked the same with their large heads and light golden hair. In the sequel, the children do not resemble each other. Also in the first movie, the 12 children were born to women in the same village (Midwich) whereas, in the sequel, there are six children, each one born in a different country.

When the children continue to resist attempts by the authorities to control them and learn their secrets, the children return to the old church where they have secluded themselves. Certain that the children are a threat to national security and the world, military forces prepare to bomb the church. Dr Llewellyn tries to persuade them to give the children a chance. Unfortunately, when a technician reaches for a radio mic to order the soldiers to stand down, his hand inadvertently brushes a screwdriver that rolls down into a flare-signaling device, closing the contacts on the flares and sending the signal to the soldiers to open fire! The church is ultimately destroyed. In the final scene, the children's hands can be seen in the rubble, and the camera finishes the pan by focusing on the screwdriver... the simple instrument that resulted in the termination of six children who may well have been the future of the human race.
