Tony Curtis, Yul Brynner, and Christine Kaufmann in Taras Bulba (1962)

Goofs

Taras Bulba

Edit

Continuity

When the brothers are sitting by the river observing Natalia on the opposite bank, in the front shot they are close together and the rear shot they are apart. Then the front shot reveals them close together again.
When the Zaporozhtzi, aka the Cossacks, attack the Poles in front of the city, there is heavy fighting with many killed, along with horses and wagons destroyed. When they pull back from the city gates and ride across the field, the field is devoid of any casualties, human or otherwise.
During the epic battle, Curtis is knocked-down from behind, in sunlight. When he is helped up moments later, he's now in shade and the day has advanced.
When Andrei is nearly run down by Natalia's coach, his cap falls off his head. While he is speaking to Natalia, the school bell sounds and Ostap beckons to him. As he trots toward Ostap, he is not wearing his cap. When they are standing by the entrance of the school, he is wearing his cap.
The position of the fatal bullet-hole on Andrei's breastplate changes from when he was shot to when Natalia finds him after the battle.

Factual errors

The Cossack's "scalp-lock" is not on the back but the front! Only the old Cossack is the one that has it correctly.
The artillery used in the opening scene is not field artillery, The wheels are too small for the guns to be dragged by horses over ground. The guns are fortress artillery where they are moved only short distances on hard surfaces. The guns would not be set out as seen in the film. There are no limbers or horse teams nearby, nor any infantry to protect the gunners.
During the pursuit of the Cossacks by the Poles, both groups of cavalry ride through a field of maize. Maize would not have been grown in Eastern Europe during this period.

Anachronisms

Artillery are seen to be firing explosive shells. Shells did not come into common use until the late 18th Century whereas the film is set in the 17th Century. Artillery in the this period would have been firing solid cannon balls into masses of troops.
The Kiev Governor's horse drawn carriage is a 19th-early 20th landau.

Crew or equipment visible

When the horses are leaping the gorge in the challenge, the shot from beneath shows the horses crossing the gap with their legs dangling down as they are being lifted across rather than leaping across.
When the cossacks are advancing on the steppe, the wheels of the filming vehicle are leaving visible tracks on the ground.
