The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960)

FAQ

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll

FAQ

Reclusive British scientist Henry Jekyll (Paul Massie) develops a formula of his own creation that allows him to separate his good side of his personality from his evil side and let him use their body. Jekyll names this evil version of himself Edward Hyde. However, Jekyll soon finds out that he is ultimately unable to control his transformations into Hyde with disastrous results for his wife, Kitty (Dawn Addams), his mistress (as Hyde), Maria (Norma Marla) and his best friend (and also, unknown to Jekyll, Kitty's lover), Paul Allen (Christopher Lee).

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll, like all the film adaptations of the story of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde, is loosely based on Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson's novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). The novella was adapted for this 1960 Hammer film adaptation of it by English screenwriter Wolf Mankowitz.

After the death of an exotic dancer named Maria, an Inspector {Francis De Wolff) goes looking for Dr. Jekyll. Meanwhile, Hyde has covered Jekyll's laboratory with gasoline and set it on fire. He then shoots a gun in the air and shouts out to the police that Jekyll is responsible and has just shot himself. Hyde is rescued as the lab goes up in flames. At the following police inquiry, it is determined that Jekyll's death was due to "dangerous experimentation" and "addiction to drugs" and Hyde is considered fortunate to have escaped the fire. However, as Hyde and Dr. Litauer (David Kossoff) leave the courtroom, Hyde suddenly transforms back into Jekyll as Jekyll tries to take his body back from Hyde. When the transformation is complete, Jekyll says that he has destroyed Hyde, but at the same time he has also destroyed himself. Jekyll is then arrested.
