The Silent Enemy (1958)

Goofs

The Silent Enemy

Edit

Continuity

A plane crashes into the sea apparently just offshore from the team's base, but when Crabb goes out to search for the wreckage he takes his boat nearly half way to North Africa.
During the first night of operations five merchant ships are blown up and a tanker set ablaze. The following morning Crabb and Thorpe talk of three ships sunk and the rest saved.
The plane that flies over and crashes clearly had its under carriage up. Later when Crabb and the divers find the wreck of the plane the undercarriage is down.

Revealing mistakes

When Crabbe and his divers are diving on the aircraft wreck to search for the briefcase, they come upon an aircraft engine that is supposed to be from the wreck.. the engine has no carburetor and a couple of the valve covers are missing. Obviously, this was not a running engine.

Anachronisms

As Lt Crabb is making his first dive, the vessel in the background in the RFA Eddy Beach, this vessel was not laid down until 1950. The vessel to the foreground, the F605 was not commissioned until 1945. The movie is set in 1942.
Crabb is shown wearing a Rolex Submariner throughout the movie. The Rolex Submariner model was not released until 1953. Crabb was in fact a Rolex owner but not that model at that time.
When Crabb disarms the Italian mine he took from a ship the previous evening, he is next to a Shackleton bomber. The film is set in 1941; the Shackleton did not take its first flight until 1949.
Although the story takes place circa 1941, not only are Dawn Addams' and Gianna Maria Canale's hair styles strictly 1957, but also are the cut and style of their clothing, which had changed dramatically during the intervening 16 years.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When the three chariots are making their way underwater there is appropriate engine noise but none of the propellers are rotating.
