According to the German news magazine "Der Spiegel" the writer and producer Ernst Neubach called the movie "a pure commercial movie".
Before the movie was released a woman named Lotte Ernst, born as Reig, divorced as Kohn, from Antwerpen, Belgium was claiming that she was the widow of Joseph Schmidt and hired a lawyer from Berlin in order to block the movie until her agreement. The distributor "Constantin-Film" however didn't bother and released the movie as scheduled. Ernst Neubach said to the accusation "It is rubbish, Josele was never married."
Writer and producer Ernst Neubach was in real life a good friend of the real Joseph Schmidt. He also wrote movies starring Joseph Schmidt, including Ein Lied geht um die Welt (1933).
