Red Buttons, Glenn Ford, and Taina Elg in Imitation General (1958)

Goofs

Imitation General

Edit

Continuity

After they knock out the observation post, "General" Savage and the Cpl grab the radio and put it on the jeep. When they return to the rest of the troops, the radio is not on the jeep but when the jeep returns to the house, the radio is on the jeep.
Initially, when Lt. Clayton shows up, his M-1 Carbine has no bayonet lug. But suddenly, halfway through the scene, his carbine has a bayonet lug on it. Moments later, his carbine again has no bayonet lug on it again.

Factual errors

The last German soldier from the observation post who fires on "General Savage". Is firing an M-1 Garand rifle. German soldiers carried the Karabiner 98k, a bolt action rifle. It's highly unlikely that a German soldier would pick up an American rifle; ammunition would be hard to come by.
The tanks have been falsely Id'ed as M26 Pershings when in fact, the German tanks are M41 Walker Bulldogs and the American tanks are M47 Patton tanks. Easy to see on close examination.
The tanks that supposed to be German are in fact American Pershing M-26 tanks with a not very authentic-looking German Cross.
Murphy knocks out two German tanks by putting mud on their periscopes, thereby blinding them. When the tank crews open their hatches to clear the mud away, Murphy and Derby drop grenades into the tanks through the open hatches. But German tanks in World War II did NOT have periscopes.

Revealing mistakes

After Cpl. Derby speaks gibberish to Lt. Clayton, a mortar shell is shown in a low, slow trajectory before exploding. A mortar shell would not be visible before exploding and, by the trajectory and speed, it would appear it had been thrown by hand by a crew member.
The metal armor that Murphy puts on his jeep flexes effortlessly demonstrating that it is a very flimsy material, such as aluminum or tin. This means that it would not have deflected the bullets from the German machine gun or German rifles. Rather, these bullets would have easily punched through this "armor" and killed Murphy and his gunman firing the Thompson Submachinegun.

Miscellaneous

The German tanks have incorrect national markings. They have white crosses on them. Rather, the crosses should be black bar crosses, with a narrow white boarder, then a narrow black boarder.
In the original US version, only the general speaks French and understands the woman who speaks only French. In the French version , all the actors playing American soldiers are dubbed in French but the French woman is dubbed, oddly, in Italian.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

At the beginning of the film as the jeep drives through the artillery barrage, one or two explosions can be seen without the corresponding "boom".
